Re: ChatGPT and what it means for our future

There’s a WSJ piece questioning whether ‘hallucinate’ is the approprate term for when AIs spout “facts” that just aren’t true. I think it’s a bit late to speculate. Trying to undo it will be like trying to replace the term “social distancing.”

Which, of course, would have been more accurately described as "physical distancing".

The point being, people can argue all day about the right phrasing, but once a term takes hold, it may be a while before it changes. Like forever. There are some exceptions. The autism spectrum used to be a “continuum” but it’s not that different. And I think both terms were coined by the same person.

DS is there a word for 1000 Km?

ChatGPT
Yes, the word for 1000 kilometers is "megameter" (symbol: Mm). The prefix "mega-" represents one million, so a megameter is equal to 1,000,000 meters or 1,000 kilometers.

User
is 1000 megameters a gigameter?

ChatGPT
No, 1000 megameters (Mm) is not equal to a gigameter (Gm).
The prefix "giga-" represents one billion, so a gigameter is equal to 1,000,000,000 meters or 1,000,000 kilometers.
Therefore, 1000 megameters is equivalent to 1 gigameter.

I am less blown away by ChatGPT than I was previously. While I do think the technology is powerful, I also think that its limitations are becoming more apparent. One article I read really hit the nail on the head for me: ChatGPT's strength isn't in giving us the right answers, but in confidently giving us answers that sound like they should be right.

This one's for you Dual & Smith:

There was a wizard of Chennai,
Who was baked by mistake in a pie.
To his mother’s cat,
He emerged through the pat,
And exclaimed, with a yawn, Where am I?
