With all the reflexive gold hate out there, it's always refreshing to see a balanced article like this one. And coming from someone in the Ritholtz loop will get a lot of attention. It's a good day for gold education. :)

Absolutely nothing.
Dollar up or down, gold is down or flat like a pancake.
What a waste of time and energy.

The description certainly sounds like India. I’m just guessing based on the name.

Well that lasted about 1 day.
Take a look at BH Madsinger’s monthly post and you will see the the PP is DEAD LAST of all portfolios tracked over a healthy time frame. It’s just not good.

I don't doubt it; the PP always lags in a bull market.
Lags to the point where it makes no sense to ever hold.
The PP to me now is like every other investing approach that underperforms a traditional 60/40 allocation.
Protecting yourself from losses incurs the greatest losses of all...lost opportunity.

I’m fine with gold, Budd, and your comments. I was just making a joke about the song.

Good song.

Probably, no one here doesn't already know this, but
If you had a time machine to go back to 1970 and were able to see the future, you would absolutely add gold to a sixty forty portfolio of stocks and bonds. ... The 60/40 and the 40/40/20 end up with roughly the same terminal value, but the portfolio that includes gold had significantly lower drawdowns
Gold, What is it Good For?
That shows a great lack of imagination.

If I had a time machine, I could do a lot better than that. :D

I think if a person decided to hold X ounces of gold and not include it in investment portfolio gains & losses, they might be less worked up about it. Outside of the PP world, I think that's how most gold owners look at it. They might be speculators, but I bet most of them see it as standing alone.

It's clear that many central banks hold a lot of gold. I'm not quite clear on what that means for a personal investor. Should I look at it that if the central banks hold it, then it should be good for me too? Or that the two cases are completely different? And why? For the record, I like gold and hold gold.

Just interjecting here that stuper1 was replying to a spammer whose posts all got deleted. So he didn't bring up central banking and their ownership of gold out of whole cloth: the spam post contained what appeared to be quite an on-topic question about that.

This was really quite a sophisticated spambot: it registered and posted in a number of threads, in a way that was not-quite-suspicious enough to warrant a ban. (That's quite an achievement, really.) The thing that really made me think it wasn't a spammer was that there was no attempt to point people to a URL. That's usually a giveaway.

Well, this one made all those posts and then latter added a sig to its account, containing a spammy URL. Said URL then showed up at the bottom of all its earlier posts. Very clever indeed.

I didn’t even know URLs were allowed in sigs. Craig used to ban them and I suppose I never checked after he moved on.

that’s not the first of those we have seen.. backward url posting, and human to beat captcha then handed over to bots spammers are the toughest to spot..

So what exactly is a spambot?

Is it a person or a machine or something in between?

mostly its a program set up to sign up for forums and post advertisements/links, because of the preventative measures to keep them out, the sign up and first few posts are sometimes preformed by a human who then turns the account over to a program (aka spam bot)

The question asked a few posts back is a good one. If Central Banks hold almost 20% of the world’s gold and if some of them (like Russia) are stocking up on it, does that tell me as an individual investor that it needs to be a part of my portfolio? Or are their curcumstances different?

They settle billion dollar accounts between countries. Gold is a practical tool for that.

Not sure if the two things are really connected. I like gold for the reasons Anthony Deden likes it. It's independent of the financial system, and it's a physical asset that has had a long history as money. It's also a piece of cake to pass along to my wife or daughter should I not use it up. That characteristic tends to be underestimated, I think. If I kick, my wife has some physical gold in a safe deposit box that can tide her over until my affairs (Fido & TDA accounts) are sorted out.

I also like that gold is money anywhere in the world. I may never take advantage of that feature but it's not unthinkable.

Russia might be motivated to hold gold because they don't want to have to settle their bills in US Dollars. I don't have that concern.

Just a few thoughts...
