He said that gold was doing the job on its own, i.e. the job of 25% of the portfolio, and that silver was superfluous. I read this in Best Laid Plans...He also mentioned what you’ve often heard about silver being more important for industrial use than a store of value.

I wasn’t aware of Harry when he was publishing that newsletter, but I think he got everyone out of silver at a fairly fortuitous time.

I'm just fearful if we have a bad global industrial recession, silver could fall into single digits. I'm not a buyer

Seems like silver could fall into single digits for any number of reasons.
If that happened, and the spread were not too crazy, I’d find it hard not to buy. Pricey poker chips in the worst case scenario.

No kidding, my gold holdings would weigh 655 lbs if silver. But that was before the boat accident.

Pirate attack?

My canoe capsized and all the precious metals went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.

Ah yes, there's nothing more relaxing than canoeing in the middle of the ocean, hundreds of miles from the nearest dry land ;)

There you have it...I’ve been arguing for months that gold ETFs are safer than physical. :-)

Canoeing over the Mariana Trench? You do realize that this is where the Megalodons are hiding? Even if not them, then there are other wildlife out there that would like to turn you into an hors d'oeuvre...

Silver is never been cheaper relative to gold as it is at the moment. Very tempted to trade gold for silver. https://www.bullionbypost.co.uk/price-r ... r/alltime/

The silver gold ratio has been very close to 100:1 before. But it is extremely high from an historical perspective. My only advice, is that if you are thinking of making a move into silver, remember that this is speculative. Beyond which I would suggest using a silver ETF if this is not intended as a long term buy and hold position. Silver has some expenses that are not reflected in the fix price quotes in all of the tickers. The first is storage. Silver is a lot bulkier than gold and as I discovered if you have more than around $5k you are going to need a good sized safe deposit box or a safe to store it. The second is the premium you pay for physical, which is almost always much higher than what one pays for gold.

Good comments. Storage cost / expense ratio seems to be one of the reasons switching to Silver is not a simple decision.

looking at these ratio charts...they dont agree in the early 90s? From both charts, however I see that the ratio can remain elevated for several years. That silver expense ratio can add up over that time.

The historic high was 100:1. I'd like to buy silver at that point.

I bought near the historic low, at 17-1.

No prizes for guessing how that turned out. :P

It's not a fantastic trade until I hit the SELL button and take the profit. But I do feel somewhat vindicated in the analysis behind my little speculation.
