IAUF - 1099 (no K-1) mixed gold etf

Post by portfolyness » Tue Jun 26, 2018 8:23 pm

I just noticed this while searching for IAU - https://www.ishares.com/us/products/293 ... ckerSearch

The press release ( https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ishares- ... 38056.html ) basically mentions that the tax setup is such that you just get a 1099 income report (presumably this avoids the collectibles tax), though when looking at the holdings ( https://www.ishares.com/us/products/293 ... ckerSearch ) things are kinda wacky - right now it's only 25% in actual gold, the rest is in t-bills and a strange grab-bag of stocks (a fertilizer company, a car-financing wing, etc.).

What's the deal with this? So far seems like a bad choice for trying to an IAU alternative but felt like sharing in case anyone else has opinions.

(Also, first post on GI. Will write a bigger introduction soon!).

Maybe not a bad idea, make of fund that's mostly cash, so the value of the gold in the fund is what changes, and you can say its not a gold fund to the IRS.
