Dealer fees on gold - bar cheaper than coin

Post by D.J. » Mon Mar 05, 2018 6:01 am

So I'm looking at a well-known local gold dealer. Prices per gram (1 g).

34.6 EUR is the current gold price
39.4 EUR is the price I get for buying 20x Vienna Philharmonic coins (3.1103g) - that's 13.8% higher than gold price; their buy price is 36.68 EUR (diff: 7%)
35.61 EUR is the price I get for buying a 100g gold bar Argor Heraeus/PAMP Switzerland - that's 2.9% higher than gold price; their buy price is 34.40 EUR (diff: 3.4%)

The gold bar deal seems a lot better. Should I get that or still the coins?

So those Philharmonics are 1/10 ounce each? That's probably why the premium and spread is higher.

Can you buy 1 oz. coins instead? They would probably be a lot cheaper.

Ah, yes. That's closer.

36.05 EUR /g. So a premium over the bar but a lot cheaper.

Thanks, not sure how I missed that.

I have always read that it's easier to counterfeit bars than coins, which is one reason I have stayed away from them.
Maybe that info is obsolete. Counterfeiters are getting better at producing coins of all kinds. Still, I feel safer with them and will pay a premium for coins. In fact, until I become the personal jester of a spendthrift Saudi prince or win Powerball, it'll always be coins for me.

I like the small, 1oz units both for buying and (someday) for selling.

I like coins too, and as long as the premiums for proof Eagles are so low, I like them the best of all.
