India & Venezuela

Post by I Shrugged » Mon Dec 19, 2016 7:43 am

Has anyone been following the news about India, and then Venezuela, cancelling their most commonly used (denomination) banknotes? Their thinking is that people have to come forward to redeem their cash for new cash or electronic deposits. In India, and maybe Ven, anyone who cannot account for the amount of cash they own is considered a tax cheat, and forfeits a portion of their money.

Supposedly India is targeting gold holdings too, although that might be only rumor so far.

I suppose this had happened before, but I was not aware of it. The possibility that your country makes your physical cash worthless in an instant, that is.

In India it is being seen mainly as a positive but the political opposition is using it as an opportunity to gain ground.
Besides the huge underground, hidden economy (hardly anyone pays income tax) there was a big problem with counterfeit notes from Pakistan. This had to be stopped with new, harder to copy notes, or the Indian economy was too vulnerable to destabilization.
Unfortunate situation but moving in the right direction.

Update. The Indian stock market has cratered since new tax schemes and the wars on cash and gold.

Really? The article seems super sensationalized and based on only 1 data point.
Did it mention the stock market? Here's an article from 24 July that discusses the all time high of the stock market

And the currency (rupee) has been strengthening against the $.
Amazon, Apple, etc are investing bigtime in India.
