What is your opinion about this option for holding gold for europeans? What kind of structure is "zero bond denominated in gold"? How can I evaluate its safety?

If I was in Europe and wanted to use an ETF or similar product for gold I'd use ZGLD. That is the ETF issued by the Canton Bank of Zurich for gold. The ETF is 100% backed by gold and even convertible to physical gold if you show up at the bank (if I recall from the translated prospectus).

9.5 years later I'm also looking at Xetra gold :-)
They have a fancy dedicated website now: https://www.xetra-gold.com/en/

It looks as good as ZGLD with a slightly lower TER, and the fund is way larger and way more liquid.

I only can't find any information about the performance compared to the actual gold price (tracking difference). Does anyone know how to figure that out?

PS I am comparing Gold ETCs to have in addition to physical gold. It makes rebalancing a bit easier.
