Re: The GOLD scream room
Another beautiful maple purchased. This one is pre-DNA era, so it’s got a smoothly machined face. Tested with a sigma machine to be extra sure. It’s from 2006.. gotta wonder about its ownership history.

Re: The GOLD scream room
The price of gold seems to have taken a beating this week while I was busy battling my TV and internet provider's customer service team.

Re: The GOLD scream room
Of course it did! I bought a bunch over this past month, so I can say it's definitely my fault.

Re: The GOLD scream room
Oddly enough the new 1oz Brittania's with his majesty Charles III has the smallest spread (1.25%) at my local dealer now. Bargain, not ? Seems he is not very popular amongst investors

Re: The GOLD scream room
Poor Charles. That’s going to be my next coin, if I have anything left over after taxes. Property tax always wipes me out around this time of year.
What is the spread on the 2023 with Elizabeth, Vil?

Re: The GOLD scream room
I've heard of some complaining about scuff marks, scratches, even pits etc. With softer metals (near 24ct gold) processing where coins drop on top of each other and that rattle around in tubes when being transported can leave scuffing. The Royal Mint might do better by employing the same encapsulating at the point of Minting as applied by Perth Mint. Dealers will just tend to fall back on the 'bullion' get-out.
When individuals buy just a single coin and as new from the mint receive something like

its inclined to lead to disappointment and word-spread.
Re: The GOLD scream room
@DS re. your question - no Britannnia's with Elisabeth II ! All sold it seems ! In terms of spread - next to Brittania's with Charles are the canadian maple leafs (with Elisabeth, spread is 0.4% higher - 1.65%).
@seajay Likely I'd be repeating myself, but always wondering how gold coins are handled in US and some EU dealers (of which I am happily unaware of). Here you get them in non-bendable solid (but transparent
) plastic. Ccoins look brand new and one can see scratches only on the surface of the plastic, nothing more. I assume they were put in that plastic very soon after they were minted, no other explanation; next time I stop by my dealer, will ask them, that's a good food for thought...

Re: The GOLD scream room
I didn’t mention it here or to Apmex, but one of my tubes of silver Britannias was open with a couple coins spilling out.
No scratches that i could find, but since I had to twist the cap of the remaining tubes to open it and the tubes were also sealed with tape, I was surprised that it happened. Maybe it wasn’t twisted shut properly in the first place.
I appreciate the heads up! Maybe I’ll get a krug or an eagle instead.

Buy in person, even a quick glance will be indicative of what you're actually paying for. And you can test each coin rather than potentially getting into a conflict of "that's not the coin I dispatched" type situation. Most coins are fine, I guess its the duff ones that are more inclined to be the 'sold as bullion' posted out (scuffed) ones that in-person buyers would decline.dualstow wrote: ↑Tue Feb 21, 2023 6:43 am

I bought in person when I was starting out. I didn’t love the selection.
I use Apmex these days and so far I’ve never had to send anything back.

Re: The GOLD scream room
Happy that gold went up (on fears of bank runs?) and sad that it went up because I’d wanted to buy more in April.

Re: The GOLD scream room
Yeah looks like it.
My gold is up 1.23%. Bitcoin is up 19.76% and bonds up 1.48%.
Stocks have tanked though lol. Especially my value fund, probably cause value seems to concentrate on the banking sector.

So on that measure, and from 2018 when BitCoin became more mainstream (ignoring the huge gain in 2017), that's indicative of a general market perception of Btc being a 16x leveraged factor. Comparing 16/84 GBTC/T-Bills to 100% gold PV

Must explain my huge percentage losses last Thursday / Friday since I have investments in both the Vanguard Value Fund and Small Cap Value Fund.

EDIT: per following posts by seajay and tortoise, it’s not the spot price.
It’s the futures, because that’s what you see in the headlines.

Re: The GOLD scream room
Which ticker symbol or web site do you use to get the gold spot price?
I checked www.goldprice.com and www.kitco.com just now, and both list gold spot of about $1984.

The gold price is on my Home Screen at all times.

Re: The GOLD scream room
I see 100 troy ounce June physical delivery Futures as having breached $2000, but spot gold not quite having done so. The Futures will include a element of time value, the interest (along with storage and other incidental costs) between now and June, for example at 4%/year is near 1% for 3 months or so, which could have a $1990 type spot gold price being price at a $2010 June Futures price.
Re: The GOLD scream room
Yup. Sorry, dualstow -- gold spot is still below $2000. You're looking at the gold futures price for June.
(Edit: Strangely, GC=F displays as "June 23" for me, but in Smithers' screenshot it says "April 23". Not sure why.)
