gold has beaten equities the last 20 years believe it or not ,
but that is the only time frame for the most part
but gold is not a competitor to stocks .gold is a competitor to bonds . it goes with stocks .
a 50/50 of equities and gold has beaten equities and bonds over every time frame for more than 30 years… bonds had their great bull market but a 50/50 of equities and gold has beaten the classic combo of equities and bonds .
so never compare equities to gold , equities work with gold when one does not want 100% equities
10k grew to :
30 years equity bonds grew to 87,429 , equities gold 115,033
25 years 46,967 with equities bonds and 75,972 equites gold
20 years 39,031 equites bonds and equities gold 68,094
15 year 25,236 equities bonds , and equities gold 31,779
10 years 19,951 equities bonds , and equities gold 20,736
5 years 13,076 equites bonds 13,076 and equities and gold 15,739
3 years 9833 equities and bonds , equities and gold 10,696
1 year 8,786 equities and bonds 8786 , equities and gold 9661
gold beats bonds for 30 years

Re: gold beats bonds for 30 years
Thanks Mathjack,
Quite interesting. Is the only purpose of holding bonds to reduce volatility?
As an aside, just happened to come across this a couple of minutes ago.

Re: gold beats bonds for 30 years
i guess in a recession or depression bonds may do better but more typically the last 30 years no reason for the bonds evidently as we have had recession , covid , the dot com bust etc.
maybe if we look at individual years we can find some years it wasn’t true that gold won out but by the end of each 5 year period gold was back in the lead despite the bull market in bonds we had

Whatever the rear view mirror shows, I still like holding some treasuries.
Interesting, though. Makes me feel better about the gold I’m holding.

no one can say what the future will be like . but we certainly can talk about what already transpired in the past
