I am soon to be a Level 4 Permanent Portfolio investor.

The book states:

Buying Bonds
There are three basic ways to buy U.S. Treasury long-term bonds:
1. At auction from the Treasury.
2. On the secondary market.
3. Through a bond fund.

Which of the three do you do? And, if #3, what specific funds are you using?

Thanks

Vinny

At auction from the treasury through the brokerage service at Vanguard. It's free and overall simpler IMO than going through Treasury Direct. A lot of other places also have free brokerage service for treasuries, such as Fidelity.

I think it is personal preference really and doesn't matter all that much. If you do the work, you save the management fee. If you buy the fund, you save the personal time fee. To have someone else do it for you it will cost .06-.15% per year.
