https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-woke-m ... opin_pos_2The North Thurston Public Schools in Lacey, Wash., made headlines in November when their “equity report” classified Asian-Americans along with whites instead of as “students of color.” Apparently the Asian-Americans were doing too well academically to be students of color. After what the district said was “an overwhelming public response,” it admitted its “category choices” had “racist implications” and dropped the equity report from its website.

... America’s most progressive cities have been failing their black and Latino children for decades. How does New York Mayor Bill de Blasio respond? In January America’s self-styled progressive in chief announced that New York will abolish the entrance exam for the city’s gifted-and-talented programs for young students. If you can’t fix the schools that are broken, you cut down to size the schools that are working.

But that was before a tsunami of intolerance from the forces of tolerance inside the paper. Yup. And especially the part about every one of them being taken out of context.
It is amazing to me how on point virtually all of Life of Brian was. So many of the political battles going on today were pre-spoofed in that movie. Actually not so much spoofed as depicted in a way that faithfully represents current arguments and underscores how ridiculous many of them are. Other scenes that come to mind are the "I want you to call me Loretta" scene, the fighting between the People's Front of Judea and the Judean People's Front, and the scene about "We hate the Romans and what have they ever done for us" - followed by a long list of things like the aqueduct, roads, keeping order etc.
Not to mention my personal favorite: "Crucifixion?" "Yes" "Good. Line on the left, one cross each."

I'm hardly neurotypical, but I confess that my one exposure to Monte Python (a movie about 40 years ago in which the characters pranced around on make-believe horses) left me thinking, "I don't get it!"

A poll showing the main concerns of Dem vs Rep voters. It's no wonder the left is unhappy. Everything is about feelings rather than actual problems.
Reviewed both lists. My interpretation is that it is the Republicans who are more concerned with perceived problems than actual problems. Republican concerns are mostly centered upon them being victims.

I'm sure we have a thread on it, Vin, but I'm a centrist and I consider lax immigration enforcement to be a serious problem, or potential problem. There's a reason Biden is continuing with the "children in cages" which, now that Biden is in command, are referred to as "facilities." Maybe it's time for a new thread on that, at least.vnatale wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 12:17 pmReviewed both lists. It was a list of 12 for which significant concern was expressed...therefore my response was not just directed to the top one. I stated an overall impression from looking at all 12.
Also, I'll throw this one in there. Most of the Republican concerns are centered upon how they believe things affect them personally, not society as a whole.

With the exception of High Taxes (which could debatably be bad for the entire economy), which of those items specifically "affect them personally"? Because when I look at that GOP list, it seems like they are all societal.
Those which either affect them personally via their affiliated groups or which are grossly imagined large society problems or both would be:
1) Lack of support for the police
2) Liberal bias in mainstream media
3) General moral decline of the country
4) Socialism
5) Antifa violence
6) China
7) Legal abortion in the third trimester
Election fraud
9) Tech company censorship
10) Discrimination against Christians
Now that you motivated me to create list I now see I could have more efficiently responded by stating: "All but the first one".
I don't agree with all on the Democrats' list but I believe that far more on their list have applicability to those outside of their affiliated groups or are not imagined or both.

I don't agree with all on the Democrats' list but I believe that far more on their list have applicability to those outside of their affiliated groups or are not imagined or both.
And there's the problem. YOU think they are grossly imagined. Republicans think they are very real and extremely important, just like climate change is to the left. And you still haven't explained how any of these things are personal rather than societal. For instance, how is 'China' a personal issue?
Explain to me how this is one bit different from what you started this by saying: "It's no wonder the left is unhappy. Everything is about feelings rather than actual problems."
Is that not you starting that YOU believe all all what the Republicans believe ARE actual problems while NONE of what the Democrats believe are actual problems?
Again I stated: "Those which either affect them personally via their affiliated groups or which are grossly imagined large society problems or both would be"
Chine is not a "personal issue" but a "grossly imagined large society problem".
If they really believed the latter why are they all spending so much money on China products? Actions always speak for one's true values rather than the values one espouses.

McWhorter is a genius and one of my favorite people to listen to, despite being as he describes a "cranky liberal Democrat". And it's all because he's one of a small number of voices willing to say true things, rather than the "right" things, about race.dualstow wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 12:39 pm I miss Trebek’s enunciations already. I know his arguments about antiracism as a religion are couched in a mostly anti-religious context. Even reading them as a religious person, his points remain pretty much valid, and it's easy to interpret them as saying that antiracism as a religion detracts from and competes against true religion, which I believe it does.
Everyone has a religion (or "worldview" if you like) and McWhorter is writing from the perspective of his atheistic-materialistic-scientism outlook, which is just another religion, so his complaints against "religion" in general still apply to himself, and really the essay is describing how antiracism detracts from and competes against true religion. You can just plug in whichever true religion you want.
I do wonder what it would be like for somebody who is a member of the Church of Woke to read that.

I must have first encountered John McWhorter on C-Span's Book TV...would have been him being interviewed regarding one of his books. I was sufficiently impressed by it to buy several of his books.
I read through the above once. Quite long. Hope to be able to motivate myself to read is again.
Sent it on to several others.
