President Kennedy?

Post by whatchamacallit » Thu Apr 06, 2023 3:57 pm

Ron Paul's discussion:
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s filing papers to run for president yesterday has thrown a massive monkey wrench into the 2024 US Presidential campaign. Suddenly it looks like the seemingly-ailing President Biden will have a real challenger for the Democratic Party nomination. But how broad is RFK, Jr's appeal? The mainstream media's reaction is telling.

Does anyone think it has legs?

I can't claim to read how the democratic primary vote would go but it would seem to me that he would win against Trump or even Ron the Saint.

I am sure I don't like his 2nd amendment stance but it sounds like I like his 1st amendment stance.

From what I can tell the general opinion about him amongst many/most non-hippiesh non-woo believing Democrats is that he's a pseudo-Democrat wolf in sheep's clothing; a few seconds digging online comes up with stuff like https://twitter.com/VABVOX/status/1643934975014719488 and https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/05 ... -nightmare . I don't think someone who is an anti-vaxxer (and by "anti-vaxxer" I don't just mean merely "someone who is against against vaccine mandates"--one can be 100% against mandates on liberty grounds while still personally believing vaccines are safe, effective, and generally a good idea--but "someone who actually still believes in the now-debunked vaccines cause autism nonsense" ) will be anything near a first choice for the vast majority of Democratic voters.

Keep in mind that to get through the Democratic primary one has to appeal to lots of college-educated voters....and for that matter, to voters who generally believe in science over conspiracy theories.

Finally, consider that RFK Jr. has also flirted with "stolen 2020 election" theories (at the very least, he has appeared at events with people claiming such); that isn't exactly going to endear him to the Democratic primary electorate as a whole.

He doesn't come across (at least to me) as a hard left economic populist like Sanders or AOC (or even to the degree of say, Sherrod Brown) so I doubt he gets that wing of the Democratic Party either.

He is of course free to run in 2024 if he wishes but I'd be willing to bet good money he doesn't even make it as far then as Marianne Williamson did in 2020.
