Re: QCOM will be my next vp pick
old thread, old pick. It is not my next pick.
There’s an interesting article in the WSJ about Apple’s struggle to replace Qualcomm’s modem chip with something in-house.
[ but see Tortoise’s response below ]
It’s relatively difficult compared to designing their own microprocessor. In the meantime, Apple will buy the chips from Qcom through 2026.

Apple seems to be a company that just really doesn't want to become the next IBM.dualstow wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 10:16 am old thread, old pick. It is not my next pick.

I remember Larry Ellison articulating the mistake as, "They shipped the first Microsoft/Intel PC and called it the IBM PC."

Well-written refutation of the recent WSJ hit piece on Apple's cellular modem project:dualstow wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 10:16 am old thread, old pick. It is not my next pick.

Re: QCOM will be my next vp pick
Thanks for posting that- it was a good read. Bad blood indeed between the two firms. That was even made clear in the apparently awful WSJ piece. Most of this is about timing and exaggeration, but in the middle a motive for a “hit piece” was made clear: Qualcomm doesn’t want Apple poaching any (more) empoyees. Fair enough.
Even my gullible self thought the line about the modem chip taking up half the phone was surprising.
I guess we’ll get to hear more of Apple’s side one day when their chip is finished and they can acknowledge the project.
In the meantime, I wonder if the WSJ will post a follow-up or some corrections.
