PP FORUM STAYING -- details here

Post by craigr » Mon Jan 02, 2017 2:42 pm

Here's the update on the forum.

Xan has offered to host the site going forward. It will be the same message DB we have here perhaps minus a couple days as the DB transitions over to the new host. The domain will be the same, etc.

Stand by for more details.

Huzzah. Thanks, Xan, for stepping up, and Craig for being open to the idea/helping with any transition.

I'm mainly a lurker, but find much value in this form, both in the PP discussions and the 'open' discussions. Appreciate all the effort that has gone into hosting/maintaining the forum (including the moderation!), as well as the thoughtfulness the active members put into their posts.

HOW much $$ would be a suggested contribution by each of us? Per month? Per year? One time payment? A series of payments?

I expect the hosting costs to be something like $15/month for the server (including backups), and something like $15/year for the name. Unless I'm drastically underestimating the traffic here, which I don't think I am. I'm okay with ponying up for a while. Maybe at some point I'll set up some kind of "tip jar", if that becomes necessary.

At the moment I'd suggest that the very worthwhile impulse to contribute be directed towards Craig and/or MediumTex. They're the ones who have spent who knows how much out of their own pockets over many years, and they created this whole community in the first place. Maybe they'd pick a charity for us all to throw a few bucks at to say thank you.

Thanks for the offers. If anyone wanted to donate for me, please send it to your local Meals on Wheels charity to help an elderly or other homebound person have a nice meal.

If you're reading this, you're now seeing the new forum. Let me know if you see something that doesn't work.

One thing that may be weird for just a little while are emails to/from the forum. If you rely on email notifications, you might plan on just checking in every so often instead. All of that should be normal soon. Everything else should be working... If not, as I said, please let me know.

Thanks Xan for keeping the forum alive. I know there's not much activity on the forum lately but it's a place to go for reassurance and advice while pursuing an unconventional investment strategy. I don't post much but check in almost everyday for the interesting topics and intelligent conversation.

Thanks for the kudos, everyone! Craig should get most of the credit.

As far as making contributions, I had previously suggested that (at least for now) anybody wishing to donate should do so according to Craig's wishes, and then he replied that donating to your local Meals on Wheels would be a good thing to do. So if you'd like to donate something, please do so that way.

Xan,

Donating elsewhere will be done.

You're missing out on free craft beer, though.

Really appreciate all the offers of support. Just knowing I'm not in this alone means a lot. Thanks everyone.

Many Thanks also, Xan... This forum has been part of my daily dose of sanity routine for over 5 years and like many others I would greatly miss the excellent and stimulating dialogue...

? on an avatar, the profile page only gives a gallery option (none there) or "remote" avatar. I uploaded from my computer before. How are some of you guys getting avatars showing?

The web server account needed permission to write to the upload directory in order for avatar uploading to work. It does now. That's a good example of a little thing that can get broken in a transition.

I recently noticed that while my desktop displays all avatars, my ipad doesn't show my own, nor desert's avatar.
