My return was about -6% for the year, hardly disastrous, although of course not delightful either.

FWIW, our (my wife and I) combined return for 2015 was -4.0%.  And that's for a combined portfolio with this overall asset allocation (only part of which is dedicated to a PP):
3% Commodities
3% Int'l Bonds
4% Cash
6% REITs
9% Gold
10% US Bonds
25% Int'l Stocks
40% US Stocks

My losers (rough order):

Gold (-10ish)
Small Cap Value (-5%ish)
Total International
TIPS
Long Term Treasury

Gainers:
Total Bond Index
US Large/Mid Cap index (Russell 1000)
Short term Bond Index
REIT
VG Int'l Explorer (active fund)

Total down around 2%

Two accounts - Golden Butterfly-esq IRA; Swenson in 401(k)

Get used to it...more of the same this year.
So tired of this portfolio. Down, down and more down.
Thought we were getting there. No such luck.

Yeah... got to see green on the overall PP value for a few days, and now red again.  Certainly getting old, agreed.

Could be worse with a 60/40!

Many funds in 2015 were negative, and many were also worse than the Permanent Portfolio. If you invest long enough you're going to get negative years. It's just a question of how negative you can handle with whatever asset allocation you're using.
