Antifragility Podcast from Nassim Taleb

Post by craigr »

Nassim Taleb gives an interview on his new book about "antifragility" on econtalk:

I think the Permanent Portfolio shares many of these "antifragile" attributes due to the design:

In many ways, Harry Browne and Nassim Taleb share many similar ideas on market risk and uncertainty. Based on my experience at start-ups and unpredictability, I will say that is what attracted me to Harry Browne's ideas as well. Harry Browne took uncertainty seriously and thoughtfully.

Thanks for posting this, craigr. I listened and enjoyed it, even though it's a bit over my head, conceptually at times. Taleb makes an interesting point about comparing what make us physically stronger and extends that same concept into the economy. One problem I have with this notion is that the physical body is a natural system and the economic body is... well, I just don't know what it is, so I suspect there may be some limitations built into this line of reasoning. I like that he talks about risk and how it's being shifted to the little guy and he's openly critical of the way the system is rigged. I'm somewhat put off by the Black Swan approach in that it's basically selling copy on fear of the unknown and, apparently, the unknowable. I certainly hope the PP concept really is antifragile. Taleb seems to likes the FTM approach that Larry Swedroe prefers. Near the end he lost me when he spoke about asceticism in contrast to Buddhism. Here he showed me that he has a superficial understanding of Buddhism, at best.

Here's another article talking about being antifragile financially. A lot of the concepts are already built in to the PP:
