Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Okay, I'll pose the question: is it worth destroying our economy for 18 months to prevent 2.2 million deaths? The answer may well be yes, and in fact I'm not arguing that we shouldn't, but I think it's a point worth discussing. Remember it isn't just about money; these are people's livelihoods, in ...

Re: Anyone here sorry that they have the PP instead of a Boglehead portfolio?

As a recovering "maximizer" I have to admit I'm feeling a little anxious about potentially not capitalizing on this mess, which is silly. I'm sure I'll be fine. :)

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

What is school situation for everyone else here? The schools here (Central Indiana) are out until at least April 13th. Two weeks of online classes, a week of no school, then a week of spring break. No sports, clubs, or other activities at all during that time. My mother is a retired teacher in a ru...

I saw a graphic that said soap can actually penetrate and destroy this particular coronavirus.

I don’t have any way to verify if that’s correct... hopefully it wasn’t just a meme!

IndyCar is real racing, while NASCAR is merely racing-themed entertainment. ;D

Re: Rebalance during these days of high volatility?

Everyone just has to find the right balance for them. If you're checking constantly and want to use a hair-trigger to rebalance, that's fine but certainly not required. Some people may only check their accounts a few times a year and will miss short periods of extreme volatility, and that's fine too...

Regarding tests, where were they going to come from... out of thin air? Is it possible that US regulations have slowed the development and manufacture of necessary testing materials? If anyone here was President, what would you have done or be doing differently (accepting that hindsight is 20/20)? I...

Thanks for the ideas. I am thinking that I will convert half of it (along with anything new contributed) to the PP and leave the other half 60/40 and then slowly DCA it. How do you all handle your 401K? I will probably leave mine at 60/40 since there are such limited options (no LT treasuries, gold...

I have parents 80+ that watch MSNBC, so I feel your pain. I can’t really speak to what people 80+ believe. But surely(?) you realize that Trump was not calling the coronavirus a hoax. He was (rightly or wrongly) calling the Democrats’ extensive criticism of the administration’s response a hoax. Of c...

Re: Fidelity Bond and Bill Direct Purchase ?'s

You may want to investigate your 401k plan provider to see if they offer a brokerage window. If so, it would give you more options that would bring you closer to a pure STT/LTT barbell. For those whose access to retirement plans is through your employer, does your employer offer or not offer a brok...

What we refer to as “facts” are actually:

data + interpretation + persuasion

So attempting to base a discussion on “facts” is unlikely to be fruitful, and basing a discussion on raw data is highly impractical.

If the past 3-4 years have taught me anything (not to mention this thread), it’s that everyone we meet is living in “opposite world” on at least one topic. Once you realize that, it’s almost entertaining.
