Re: The Golden Dilemma
In June 2012, Boglehead Librarian Barry Barnitz actually posted a link in this forum to what I think is the same paper, even though the abstract is not exactly the same.http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/http://77.104.139.218/~gyroscop/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=1 PointedStick, you are consistent in y...

Ah, that's everything I wanted to know. Thanks, much appreciated!
And of course, you're right: the pp strategy is all about holding bullion, not numismatic coins.

I believe Craig already recommended ZGLD to you in this thread (as a second option after checking out overseas accounts). And he knows you're in Israel, not Switzerland, so... Meanwhile, you never did answer about the Jerusalem of Gold series of coins. Are those the ones with the 10% premium that yo...

Ironically, the judge blocked it because it was too lenient! As in, not all the retail outlets that serve food were covered by the law. Under the new law, 7-11 convenience stores could still sell 64 oz sugary double big gulps, whereas the bodega convenience store across the street was limited t...

Re: Troubled Waters Ahead for the PP
That is why I think Harry backed into the macroeconomic condition explanation for the 4x25 version, rather than considering macroeconomic conditions and then fitting assets to them. Regardless of how he got there, the 4x25 HBPP is a marvelous thing, and his writings are filled with pearls of wisdom...

BTW I notice you don't have I Bonds except those old paper ones? Yes, but only because I got locked out of my account by bungling the password. I have to fill out a form at a bank to unlock it and I haven't bothered. One of these days years. In principle, I have nothing against I Bonds. A lot of ...

Not that it would determine what I hold, but are t-bills state-tax-free the way 30-YR bonds are?
I don't know because I only recently started holding them. (Let's pretend t-bills are actually paying something).

I was just thinking about this on my walk. ( Gosh it's nice outside today ). I have: money market funds vanguard's treasury money market fund (soft-closed at present) SHY 6-mo bills 1-YR bills 2-YR notes 3-YR notes Eventually, I will organize these into some kind of ladder. Putting things in perspective, the last time I rebalanced was more then 2 years ago and although year to date I am down just under 1%, My portfolio increased just under 21% from last re-balance. I came close to re balancing but I never hit the 15/35 bands, I was close (33%) but I thought if I re b...

... Somewhere, I read a study comparing the happiness of two different groups of people: (1) Those with an income of around 75K/year living in a neighborhood where the mean income was 50k, and (2) individuals with an income of 100K a year, but living in a neighborhood with a mean income of 150K. Hah, that's perfect. I want the pp to go up, but perhaps the former is more pleasing for some reason.Kshartle wrote: Would you guys feel better if the PP was down 5% and S&P down 30% or PP up 5% and S&P up 30%?
I personally would feel much better about the former.

Re: Troubled Waters Ahead for the PP
I think there was a thread last year in which the question was asked, "What would make you abandon the pp?" And if I remember correctly, Medium Tex's answer was something like "3 consecutive years of (a loss)." I'm doing to adopt the same checkpoint. But, I've seen dramatic drops...

Could be, AgAu. I figured that maybe they darkened it just to emphasize the light and its range for the photo.
Still, I couldn't help but think the poor schmuck's reading in the dark.

Not if you have the right mindset and pick the right stocks, Steinmetz said. "Stock picking is always going to be the way to get superior returns if you focus on picking great companies," he said. This is what you call a circular argument of very small radius :) It reminds me of the Will...

Even if I never get to rebalance, this sure is a smoother ride than when I was 90+% in equities. Well worth the sounder sleep.

I guess I don't even really see my 30 year Treasury bonds as an "investment." I see them as an amazing hedge with respect to equities that happens to have a small expected return. Even though they are probably only the 3rd most likely to hit the 35% band -- have they ever hit in the histo...

But except for NYC, we don't have anything like European rail systems and urban anti-sprawl. Maybe forum members from there could comment, but my impression is that cars are a luxury item not to be used on a daily basis in most places. The idea that you jump in your car to go to work or run routi...

Re: Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: A New Cancer Risk in Your Home
As far as I know, they are just full spectrum lightbulbs. The blue wavelength seems to be what is helpful for SAD which you could say is due to melatonin not being completely shut of and insufficient Vitamin D (which does require UV). But with news of CFLs not actually shielding UV rays, I'd trea...
