Re: The Bond Dream Room
From the Financial Times, last week, print version: I t was a crisp September day in 2015 when Timothy Young arrived at Houten, an unremarkable Dutch commuter town, determined to col- lect an almost 400-year-old debt. He carried a case containing a fragile piece of goatskin covered in dense writ- i...

Re: Computer stuff
I just got AVG's VPN for when I'm in coffeeshops and stuff. Personally, I would think that VPNs are more important when you're at home, when any connection made can be assumed to be yours. Any connection from a coffee shop or a hotel would not be automatically associated with a particular person. U...

Re: I Thought Gold Would Fare Better in 2022-23
That first one is not so much a gold related article as a political article. it reminds me of the strawman that so many bogleheads use: Gold coins are peddled on Fox News to angry old people so gold must be bad, no matter what your reason for buying it. Have not looked at the second. The second is ...

Re: First Movie You Remember Seeing
A Clockwork Orange, when I was about six. Probably the root cause of many of my problems but on the plus side it did make me a lifelong Beethoven fan. Yikes!! I hated the movie primarily because I'm a huge Beethoven fan. I certainly don't want to associate the two. I can't imagine letting a six-yea...

Thank you for telling us about your lifestyle, Vinny. And now, back to the war… Trying to explain why maybe sometimes you need to provide more context to your stray comments. Or, is everyone else tied into second by second news? I think if we're confused about something we can just go look.

I had never thought of him as an entrepreneur before, and so far I'm unconvinced.

Re: Computer stuff
How does all this online protection affect productivity? Two things I tolerate but think get in the way of any kind of productivity are keys and passwords. I do use super strong passwords for anything related to $$$$$$$$. … I’m not being snarky when I say nothing affects productivity like having yo...

Re: Computer stuff
I remember my first encounter with PDF. I bought a set that contained two games: Wing Commander 1 and Wing Commander 2. Both games were originally floppies but this compilation had them on a CD. Instead of including both manuals, the manuals were on the CD in PDF format, along with an installer for ...

Re: Computer stuff
Debian. I use it for everything. Xan, if you wanted to hook up an external CD burner, I guess it’s a few extra steps compared to the mainstream OS’s. You probably have to find a list of likely compatible burners, and then, what, download a driver? Is that it, though? A few hours of work at most? I ...

It's possible (in fact extremely likely) that QuickBooks 2021 will run perfectly fine on Windows 11, regardless of its "certification".

Say what you will about Microsoft, and I've said plenty, but their backwards compatibility is really good. There shouldn't be any software that runs on 10 that won't run on 11. Just got my answer: "Microsoft released the Windows 11 operating system on October 5, 2021. Currently, only QuickBook...

Re: Computer stuff
I think the biggest issue (which is another way of saying what you're saying, dualstow), is that if you wait a year before using your new machine, you could have gotten a year newer machine for the same money. And that's not counting the 5% you would have earned on your cash during that year.

Re: Computer stuff
Good to know. I’ve had 16GB forever, and was looking to put 32GB in the next Mac mini. Although, I don’t need the power (for lack of a better word) that you guys need. I used to be able to have a reseller add RAM and other things, but as you well know, Mac RAM is now soldered in so you have to buy ...

Re: Computer stuff
So many machines are RAM starved. I think it's a major problem with Maca actually. 16GB is just not enough. 64 in my daily driver.
