Echoing others here...it's nice being able to enjoy this beautiful day on the East Coast while others are fretting about what to do as the stock market implodes.

A bit light on Gold at the moment. Considering doing my IRA contributions early (I usually wait until the last minute) to get back in range.

Gold!
http://danielamerman.com/course/a/pgSIXTEENok.htmlThis ability for a relatively small portfolio component to "punch above its weight" and potentially reach out and shield a much larger portfolio from inflationary losses is both rare and extremely valuable.

This has been my favorite thread of the year. PS returns from silent retreat to proclaim the gospel of 100% equities. For me, what little wealth I have is hard earned and I don’t know if I can do it again. I like having 25% of my wealth outside the system, where the have nots and do naughts can’t to...

Re: The official end of Swiss bank secrecy
There are likely far more African dictators and white collar criminals than Harry Browne types, so perhaps this is one case in which the lack of privacy is progress. (I feel funny just typing that, though). Trust the funny feeling. Reduced privacy for the good guys in order to catch bad guys is not...

I'm pretty sure Harry would have found a very polite way to say "you're insane, good luck you're going to need it" if you had the opportunity to tell him about investing in Bitcoin. That of course is the direct translation of "I wish you well". There are too many known AND as ye...

Yeah. Seems like the prudent thing to do at this point is to sit on the sidelines unless you have good reason to use the currency. The idea is out there; it's not going away.

As an investment speculation? Yeah, sure, perhaps.
But as a permissionless currency outside the reach of governments? I disagree with you here.

I'm happy w/ the ESA we opened at Schwab. Doing a PP within the account is a breeze. Wish I could say the same about my own retirement savings.

Re: Reducing 25% Gold portion out of fear of its safe keeping?
For inflation protection, how about LAND (Gladstone Land Corporation) mentioned in another thread? People gotta eat. Also, it seems like you're going through gyrations in order to make the final portfolio something you came up with: I believe 25% gold would insulate you from a treasury default, but ...

Has there ever been a legit safe asset for a substantial length of time, in practical terms? From what I understand: The first currency was coins, which have been debased throughout history by pretty much everyone. Even if they weren't, you'd still have to pay someone to store them in the bank. You...

Whats the problem with the dollar? Just dont hold it, buy stocks n'bonds. I already object to the fact that citizens are forced to do what you say...namely we're forced into investing due to inflation. I believe Joe Sixpack should be able to earn a living, put his excess money in the bank (or his s...

I even thought about employing a "fake safe" filled with washers to sound like coins along with worthless paper, but that presents the same problem as a real safe. You are still advertising the presence of valuables. If the burglars figure out your deception they are going to ask "ok...

Re: Where and how do you purchase physical gold?
For physical (40% of my gold allocation) I order from silvergoldbull.ca . Free, fast shipping; usually the lowest premiums I can find. Online dealers are pretty much the only way to go, IMO -- brick and mortar dealers just can't compete. I don't have enough cash in taxable space to buy physical gol...

I have yet only bought from the local coin dealer, and have never sold. But I have seen people bring in coins to sell back. I've not seen any forms ever exchange hands. I'll leave it at that.

Not much spare cash at the moment. We just bought our first house. I plan to buy physical gold moving forward though. Pared the 401k contributions back to the company match.

Re: Out of balance
Why can't you just use some of the cash to buy bonds inside the 401k? That won't help with the gold, but it's better than where you're at now if you're trying to follow the rules of PP. The best I could do there is an aggregate bond fund. Good expense ratio (0.02%), but only 5.95 years duration. Th...
