Re: Fed Going Nuclear - Will the PP get radiation poisoning?

It makes me wonder if the PP could hold up to a situation where the US is steadily diluted out of being the world reserve currency while the long-term debt cycle comes to an end. What's your prediction on which currency will replace the U.S. dollar? Euro? The euro area economy is even weaker than t...

Re: A popular blogger misses most of it with Gold and the PP

2. I think it was craigr who pointed out that many of the largest companies in the S&P 500 have substantial commercial real estate holdings. That means an exposure to real property without the managerial risk and expenses associated with selecting and owning an individual REIT. That's a good point. ...

Re: A popular blogger misses most of it with Gold and the PP

The PP seems to avoids real estate, perhaps because many people are already heavily invested through home ownership (I'd need to revisit what HB says). OK, I checked: HB discusses real estate on pages 114-115 of Fail Safe Investing. He focuses on the fact that your home is not an investment - inste...

Re: A popular blogger misses most of it with Gold and the PP

Probably lost in my comment responding to ERN's article was this link to an article by the excellent financial advisor Steven Evanson: https://www.evansonasset.com/alternative-asset-classes-64.htm That's an interesting read. Thanks for sharing. Agreed. In his conclusion, the author states that "the...

Re: What us your current portfolio?

I initially went all in with the PP in 2008 but transitioned to the GB about 3 years ago. The reason I did that was precisely for the reason people often warn about with the standard 4x4 - that it will be hard to stick with in times of prosperity when stocks are outperforming (hello Bud and Mathjak...

Financial Planning Software

Do folks here have preferred software for financial planning (e.g., running retirement scenarios)? I've used Silver Planner but it didn't seem ideal for modeling investments like gold. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

For those of you who have FULLY embraced the Permanent Portfolio and made your investment all at once can you reveal where...

Re: Texas Bullion Depository Open for Business

It may be worth checking to see if Texas Bullion Repository outsources its website and cybersecurity, like Perth Mint does. I bet the answer is yes, in which case your data are actually in the hands of that company, not the one you think. I contacted the Texas Bullion Depository and they said "All ...

Easy enough to run such things. :-) Please reply to this message so I can gauge interest. I can set up a new Discourse forum today with the trial and we can figure out t...

Re: Depressed

Perhaps you need to tighten up your rebalance bands.  Stocks were down 10% a few months back, then popped up near the highs.  Did you harvest any of this volatility?  IMO the 15/35 bands are too wide to capture small swings like we saw in the fall.  Using 20/30 or 22.5/27.5 bands would allow you to...

Uncharted Waters?

While reading the latest weekly market comment  from John Hussman - http://www.hussmanfunds.com/wmc/wmc150209.htm - I came across this sobering paragraph: [quote] By our estimates, never in history, prior to the past 5 weeks, have the prospective 10-year nominal annual total returns of both stocks a...

Re: How Would The PP Perform In A Global Depression?

One thing I know is triple A corporate bonds held up very well during the Great Depression, so that is probably what we'll see when faith in the U.S. government erodes. My recollection is that there was some survivorship bias there: for corporations that didn't go bust, their bonds held up OK. But ...

I do the same thing, BBB. Of my paper gold, a fraction is SGOL and the remainder is GTU. I buy SGOL because it's commission-free, and when the GTU discount gets to -8%, I sell all the SGOL and replace it with GTU, on the reasoning that my money is buying more shares, enhancing its purchasing power....

Goodasgold, you are absolutely right. I googled "safe deposit box insurance" as opposed to gold coin insurance.  Previous threads on this topic fizzled out because it turned out to be very expensive to insure coins.  However, I discovered that it is NOT so expensive to insure safe deposit boxes! Re: Is The PP Good For Investing?

The yield curve was inverted in 1969 so it may not have made much difference, but the above numbers are for 10 year Treasuries.  There were no 30 years issued then, so perhaps MG's data was extrapolated somehow...with no gold and no Treasury options, the PP in 1969 is a purely mythological beast an...

As someone who bought in at the top (early 2000) and sold at the bottom (early 2009), I have vowed never to do that again. I went all-cash in 2009 (then did years of research, then last year discovered PP) and I'm not about to put 25% of that into a stock index fund at these levels. Yes, I realize t...

As far as I can see, the only reason to hold a gold ETF is if you have a lot of money tied up in tax-deferred instruments, such as a 401(k) plan or IRA.

I haven't bothered with overseas storage, either, and I have Canadian cousins. Still, many of those wiser than me -- pretty much everyone here is -- do recommend it. I pay nothing for my safe deposit box storage just for keeping US$10K in a checking account at the bank. If I open a new box at a dif...

minimizing gold storage fees

Having become convinced that PP is the way to go, I am finally getting around to implementation. Naturally, part of that is seeking to minimize fees (e.g., why buy an actively managed stock mutual fund with an expense ratio of 1% or more when I can buy an index fund with an expense ratio of 0.10%?)....

Re: is pp for all ages and portfolio sizes?

Few folks here or anywhere else will need to worry about having that much money to invest, but it seems that the long-term ultra-rich (at least those who care about what we might call dynastic wealth) often invest in tangible assets like land and art (and gold, but we've got that covered via PP). D...
