Re: Amazon medical transcriptions

Happy Birthday, Pugchief!

How many is that in pug-years?

Sorry I can't be there to help you celebrate. How about if I just send you an I-bond as a gift instead?

Re: How do you invest the Cash portion?

Vinny, Financial safety is reinforced through diversity and liquidity. T-bills held in a brokerage account at Vanguard are safe enough for “normal” times because Vanguard is a big active player in the enormous world-wide secondary market for Treasurys. Unless there is a terrific disruption in this m...

Re: How do you invest the Cash portion?

Vinny, Remember that if you held your short term T-bill to maturity, you got your full principal back plus your original stated interest. Note too in the 2008 example you cited that when US interest rates fell, the principal value of the 30 year T-bonds in the HBPP rose dramatically. You always have...

Re: How do you invest the Cash portion?

So, for that miniscule difference, why bother taking the credit risk of the CD-issuing bank PLUS the credit risk of the FDIC?

If all you really care about is a higher interest rate, I am sure there must be some really red-hot CD rates from Venezuelan banks right now. Adios, amigos!

I check my portfolio every day. Now that I am retired, it is one of my varied hobbies. I find it fascinating to watch the assets move and read the discussions on this forum. While I have recently watched STTs and LTTs in detail, I expect to eventually move on and spend more time studying the gold an...

Re: How do you invest the Cash portion?

I would like to oblige Pugchief with better fixed rates on I-bonds, but neither our super-low yield curve nor the current crop of Trump Treasury officials support that. In fact, I am pessimistic about the future of the US savings bonds program, given the Goldman Sachs background and outlook of Treas...

EE bonds can be redeemed for more than their nominal value after one year. 5 year CDs cannot.

Pet Hog, I disagree with your assumption that “someone in the accumulation phase has greater risk-tolerance” and therefore can be (ought to be?) more aggressive with their investments. Consider a couple of real-world examples: Example #1. 52 year old female (divorced, with 3 kids) came down with bra...

drumminj, I do not buy 5 year CDs. I buy Treasury-backed securities because safety and liquidity is more important for my HBPP Cash quadrant than yield. More important than what I think, however, is what you think: Why do you want to buy a 5 year FDIC-backed CD, which is illiquid (as you yourself de...

I haven’t bought a T-bill with a maturity longer than one year for several years now.

Unless you have some specific liability matching in mind, which would rather buy today?

-A one year Treasury bill at 1.64%, or ,
-A three year Treasury bill at 1.57%,.

Re: How do you invest the Cash portion?

A 3 month T bill sold for 1.56% on 11/21/19 at Fidelity. I think the 4 week was about the same.

With yields this low and the Treasury curve this flat, isn’t it pointless (and unnecessarily risky) to buy one year bank CDs instead of T-bills on auto-roll?

I am alternately fascinated and perplexed by the endless hunt for yield in Cash that populates this thread and others like it. Read the introduction in Harry Browne's Guide to Swiss Banks, first published back in 1976. Uncle Harry starts with a story about a Jewish family in Germany that prepared for the worst in the early 1930s by transferring their assets into gold and making deposits into then-secret Swiss bank accounts....

I don't see the point of owning something with a duration longer than your lifetime. I guess if you're young it's okay. In 30 or 35 years I'm gone anyway.

Think again. How long do you think a $20 gold coin will last?

Re: US Treasury to issue a 50-year bond

There is nothing magical about a 30 year maturity for Treasury bonds. Some municipalities and institutions (and countries) already sell 50 or 100 year bonds. Trump wants to introduce the sale of 50 year T-bonds to reduce financing costs for the federal government, especially for long term infrastruc...

The inversion of the Treasury yield curve disappeared today. The entire curve is now positive from the 3 month T bill to the 30 year T bond. I first noticed the present inversion between the 2 and 3 year T bill in Dec. 2018. Hard to say whether this development portends an end to lower interest rate...

Senator Warren has already made it clear that her wealth tax will only affect the richest 0.1% (or those with more than $50 million net worth). She claims it will have no effect on those who are merely affluent-- like you and me. Her press release is found here: https://www.warren.senate.gov/newsroo...

Re: a Wealth Tax thread

Senator Warren's wealth tax proposal is the most menacing development of this electoral season for two reasons:

1. Her proposal would in many cases amount to double taxation.

2. Her rationale for this tax incites a dangerous hatred of the rich.

I think I read somewhere that Teddy Roosevelt wanted the high relief coin for general circulation but the Treasury told him that it was impractical because it would not stack properly.

Have you tried stacking your 2008 restrike?
