Re: What Car Do You Drive?

I ride a Schwinn road bike for most of my local trips. I't good to see a lot of people driving manual transmissions.  With my recent research into cars, I was led to believe that the manual transmission is dead in America. It's a shame how rare it is.  When my wife got her Vibe, they had to special...

Re: What Car Do You Drive?

We have an '04 Pontiac Vibe and a '11 Mustang GT convertible (fire engine red).  Maybe 400+ horsepower is overkill, but taking a fast convertible out in the hill country on a beautiful spring day is a fantastic experience. My mustachian perspective would say to rent the Mustang a couple times a yea...

Two of our three volatile assets have been cratering lately, resulting in being just about exactly even on the young year, and that's a bad thing?

Re: How to Deal with Dumb People

I think this is the main reason why the Founding Fathers are rightly revered: not only were they brilliant men, but they recognized the limits of brilliance, including their own.  That is a rare thing indeed in the course of history.

Re: The hypocritical cliff

It is truly painful to watch both sides argue about what combination of spending and tax moves should be made to tackle "our huge national debt problem." We need a trillion dollar coin, now.  I can't stand to listen to it any more. The political theater alone would be well worth the move....

Diversification in brokerages as well as fund families is a really good thing, and probably worth way more than 2 basis points.

Re: The hypocritical cliff

A basis is never taxed. Was the brokerage account funded by the money fairy?  Or was it by income which was earned, with a huge chunk taken out for taxes?  If (say) 35% of the money earned was taken out, then the investment income earned was 35% less than it should have been.  It has already all be...

That's because the basis was already taxed when it was earned.

Re: The hypocritical cliff

MachineGhost, I think you need to think it through from a different perspective to try to determine where your logic may be misfiring.  You've had 3-4 people come out refuting that claim so that should be an indication that you need to re-evaluate your thought process behind it. MachineGhost has be...

Don't forget that on all these devices, you can plug the RJ11 into the phone wires in your house, not just to a single phone.  Just be sure to disconnect your internal wiring from the phone company (a box outside your house) first.

Re: Can An Atheist Be Pro-Life?

I don't believe that even the most ardent pro-lifers have ever proposed a law banning abortions in cases where the mother's life is in jeopardy.  You're right that there's a life-versus-life question there, and it is always up to families and their doctors to work through that tragic situation. The ...

Re: Can An Atheist Be Pro-Life?

TripleB, I agree with much of what you say on other topics, but on this one it sounds like you're twisting the definition of "life" into a pretzel in order to justify a position you've already decided on.  In other words, I think your definition of "life" came about after you dec...

Re: Poll: Which class should perform falling off the fiscal cliff?

There are serious problems with this thinking. As a business owner and individual investor, I am holding back money that could be used because I don't know how much cash I will have to send to Uncle Sam. As a matter of point, I have opportunity to buy some great investment property but only if my e...

Re: Poll: Which class should perform falling off the fiscal cliff?

True.  But what does it mean to fall off the cliff?  Congress has until April 15, 2014 (with many caveats) to change the rules for tax year 2013.  The only thing really pressing at this point is the AMT for tax year 2012.  It's true that the specter of unresolved taxes will cause a lot of uncertaint...

I don't think it means anybody is selling; it just means that some of the value of EDV yesterday was the dividend coming up today.

Re: School Shooting

If I did have a son who was unstable or violence prone, I believe I'd lose the guns. A friend of mine has an unstable (adult) son.  One day the son grabbed a kitchen knife and made a violent approach towards his mother and brother.  The dad shot him with his 9mm.  (He lived.)  The grand jury did no...
