MK et al., would you comment on the idea of using kelp as a one-stop source of dietary minerals?

Re: Hillary Is Innocent

Maybe I'm missing something. . . but if the ultimate goal was to prevent a conviction, wouldn't it have been better to go ahead and prosecute on this administration's watch, and exonerate her on the merits? Once this administration is out, what precludes a more hostile one from bringing her up on ch...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

God won't violate His justice nor His promises.  The wages of sin is death.  We were told that before the Fall and chose to do it anyway.  That can't just be hand-waved away.  Fortunately for us, God Himself chose to come down and bear the penalty on our behalf! As for having "other people&quo...

Re: Advanced DIY

For a while now, I've been getting fresh Jersey milk from a neighbor. With about 20 minutes of effort, I get five different dairy products from it. It's been months since I've had a need to visit the dairy case at the store. When I come home with a gallon mason jar full of milk, I let it sit in the ...

Is there a reason why minerals have to be consumed in the water we drink?  I got to wondering whether salting food liberally with sea salt or Himalayan salt would accomplish the same thing, or whether there's a concentration gradient issue.  I don't remember much from College biology, but the princi...

It's not what the state has to gain, but rather what's to be gained by those who line the lawmakers' pockets.  Think
Walmart, for one.

Re: Minimum Wage Now $15 an Hour!

Seattle is an expensive place to live in, so $15 might make sense there, but if you're picking apples in rural WA, you can probably get by with less than $15. This last fall, a number of orchards in Eastern Washington let tens of thousands of pounds of fruit (mainly cherries and apples) rot on the ...

Re: Minimum Wage Now $15 an Hour!

This will kill small business in rural areas--which may, in the end, be exactly what is intended.  Seems that every solution the lawmakers dream up just happens to select for the Walmarts and the Monsantos of the world.  And the majority of the supposed beneficiaries of this kind of "nanny stat...

Re: Labor transitions, capital investment, and the societal meaning we all crave

The culture of small, rural towns often revolves around individual rights and freedoms, yet at the same time fosters close-knit relationships between neighbors and a strong sense of community.  Unlike the typically self-centered, self-serving view of rights and freedoms that predominates in the cit...

Re: Labor transitions, capital investment, and the societal meaning we all crave

It is odd that given our great wealth and freedom (relative to a lot of other places), Americans aren't generally happier. I think part of it is cultural, in that our culture is very focused on individual rights/freedoms and competition, both of which aren't great ways to create good social relatio...

Warning: the black filter elements, assuming that's what you are talking about, have been highly unreliable in the past. We went through about 10 of them trying to find 4 that wouldn't fail within a few days of installation. If they have fixed the quality control problem(s), then they would be a go...

Re: Brita faucet filters

Don't reverse osmosis systems demineralize the water?  My understanding is that over time demineralized water causes calcium, magnesium, and other necessary minerals to be leeched out of your system.  I seem to recall some mention of adding Himalayan salt to RO-filtered water to avoid that problem.

Re: Labor transitions and capital investment

I am skeptical of the "self-actualization" ideal and the claim that we're on the cusp of an age where work will be obsolete and people will be free to pursue loftier pursuits.  In my experience, the vast majority of people need work for their basic sense of orientation and purpose.  The hu...

Re: Brita faucet filters

When comparing different models, be sure and take account of the expected life of the filter elements.  Many models require the elements to be replaced fairly regularly, regardless of the amount of use, or else they become reservoirs of bacteria.  Also, note the difference between a "filter&quo...

Re: Labor transitions and capital investment

Good neighborhoods require good people, and after nearly 70 years of social engineering (including implementation of "neighborhood villages") and the expenditure of many billions of dollars, it's clear that there are a whole lot of people who are bound and determined to f*** up their lives...

Very interesting subject, and one I've been thinking about lately as employment opportunities continue to dry up around me in a small town whose economy has historically centered around logging and cattle production.  Here, the "factory" model has never predominated, and large segments of ...

Re: Brita faucet filters

I've never used a Brita filter, but recently I've been doing a lot of research on water filters generally.  From my reading, I've gathered that the Brita filters are pretty much bottom-of-the-line and intended primarily to improve the taste of water rather than to remove any real nasties.  There are...

Great post.  Yes, this is the best breakfast ever.  Unfortunately, at my age this kind of thing goes directly to the middle--so it's a rare treat. But I beg to differ with the author about factory-farmed eggs being indistinguishable from "better" eggs (even those laid in your own backyard)...

There's a far bigger problem here than the indiscriminate use of a sex offender registry. Re: Smart People Defy Usual Correlations When it Comes to Happiness

One possible explanation that this article does not address is that the recent proliferation of high-tech companies, and the concentration of high-IQ people in IT centers, has created new opportunities for the coupling-up of individuals who fall to the far right on the Asperger's spectrum.  I'd surm...
