Re: Maximum Bond Upside

It is interesting that people have different risk tolerance levels for bond yields, much like Bogleheads have different risk tolerance levels for stocks.  Some Bogleheads use 'age in bonds', or 'age-10' or just '60:40' stocks:bonds.  There is no right answer, it just depends on the individual.  Howe...

I predict a big 'ol blow-out, just like the great Super Bowls of the 80s when Elway was leading the Broncos:

Re: New Hampshire

Watching the Democratic Debate right now from NH.  Thoughts so far: 1) I am sad that Martin O'Malley is gone, because it means that I have to hear Hillary 50% of the time instead of 33%. 2) When Hillary talks, I feel like she is always scolding and yelling.  Can't hear that for the next 4 years. 3) ...

Re: ¿Jeb?

Jeb coming out with some 11th hour incriminating photos of Rubio, reminds me of when the Gore campaign leaked the news that GWBush had an old DWI, just days before the 2000 election.  The Bushes might just have to do something like this to pull poor Jeb out of the trash bin.

Darn, looks like I missed part 1, hopefully I can catch it on the web at some point.  I did enjoy the 3rd season of Damages , which was inspired by the Madoff scandal.  It had some big name actors, Glenn Close, Lily Tomlin, Martin Short, Campbell Scott... Speaking of Billions, I've only seen the fir...

Re: Rand Paul ends campaign

He would delete them himself periodically.  I can't remember why. I never understood why he would do that.  My main takeaway from his posts was that it is better to go with a rolling ladder of bonds at the steepest part of the yield curve, rather than the classic ST-LT bond barbell.  Makes sense to...

That's a nice succinct summary.  I still can't believe Fiorina hasn't dropped out yet.  The last remaining 'undercard' candidate.  Is she still holding rallies, and if so, what must that be like?  Are there more than 10 people present?  Are they giving out free HP schwag, like printer cartridges?

Re: ¿Jeb?

Jeb also needs to stop busting out the word 'caliphate' in every debate.  He even admits that he didn't know what that meant a year ago, and guess what, almost nobody listening to the debate knows what it means now.  Just makes him look like he's trying to show off his intellectual chops, and nobody...

Re: Maximum Bond Upside

How much will we make when long bonds reach -1%? Well, I went ahead and updated my previous chart to include negative yields.  The red dot represents current market conditions in the US, 30-year bond yield ~ 2.5%, price 100.  If yield drops to -1%, then price is 222. http://i68.tinypic.com/xf53dc.p...

Re: Maximum Bond Upside

Checking back in with this thread...international bond yields have gotten even more crazy. Japan: 30-yr = 1.06%, with everything negative below 10 years. Swiss: 30-yr = 0.278%, everything negative below 15 years. Insane.  Still lots of upside for holders of US bonds, with the 30-yr at 2.66% and the ...

Re: Germans Want to Impose Currency Controls

When I first heard about Sweden going cashless, it seemed like a good idea for a small progressive state to give it a try before the rest of the world.  Heck, I hardly ever carry cash anymore, so I hope it works for them, and am interested to see the results of the experiment.  If I were Germany, I'...

Nothing has caused me more cognitive dissonance than overshoot / peak oil.  It's weird, but I find myself flip flopping between not caring about overshoot and peak oil, to caring too much.  It's like when I read about it, it makes so much sense that I cannot logically refute it.  The big picture ta...

Re: How Ted Cruz Got Elected to the Senate

So Cruz and Rubio are both eloquent speakers with no experience in leadership.  After 8 years of Obama, you'd think people would have learned their lesson.  I can't believe that these two clowns, plus The Donald, just finished 1-2-3 in Iowa.  And then I look over at the Dems, with Hillary vs the Soc...

Has anyone been spending their bitcoins?  I saw a show last night with Morgan Spurlock, called Inside Man, in which he attempts to live on bitcoins for a while.  It was on Netflix, season 3. It was surprising how many places are starting to accept bitcoins.  The show got me fired up to use my bitcoi...

Re: Depressed

Perhaps you need to tighten up your rebalance bands.  Stocks were down 10% a few months back, then popped up near the highs.  Did you harvest any of this volatility?  IMO the 15/35 bands are too wide to capture small swings like we saw in the fall.  Using 20/30 or 22.5/27.5 bands would allow you to ...

For those that have done that, what allocations and maturities do you recommend?  Still treasuries, or a mix of treasuries, corporate, and/or mutual fund total bond funds?  I have to plead ignorance in understanding how bonds work?  Any comments appreciated. Thanks  I think that's an excellent port...

Re: No where to hide

That's pretty much what I switched into, about 26 months ago.  I still like the PP, and think it's a great portfolio.  But I prefer something closer to 30% equity, 60% 5-10YT, and 10% gold.  10% gold happens to be about the max I'm comfortable holding in physical form as well, so it's a good match ...

Re: No where to hide

Aren't many of us interested in the PP exactly because of the 40 yr bull markets in gold and treasuries? Isn't it just recency bias? What if those bulls are over? I agree with you, Reub.  The past bull markets in gold and treasuries are what put the PP onto my radar screen in the first place, way b...

Re: How Are You Currently Splitting PP Assets Across Roth, Tax Deferred, and Taxable

LTT - 100% non-taxable accounts Reasoning:  All interest is taxable.  In the event of rebalancing or selling 20 years for 30 years, I may take a gain or loss.  If it's a gain, the gains are taxable.  If it's a loss, I cannot harvest it (I'm assuming, for example, if I sell a treasury with 20 years ...

Re: How I've come to view Gold

I view gold as a way of getting some non-USD currency exposure in the portfolio.  Over the past year, the dollar has strengthened, holding the USD price of gold down.  If/when the dollar weakens, we should see a pop in the USD gold price. Also, having 25% gold in the portfolio allows you to get rid ...
