Re: Is the Permanent Portfolio Broken?

You are speculating that Bretton Woods was not a massive contributing factor in the backtest data. Loqve your thought process and contribution, but that part is not speculation. ;) https://portfoliocharts.com/2020/08/21/metal-money-and-the-measurable-value-of-gold/#returns Nice article Tyler! Re: Is the Permanent Portfolio Broken?

most conventional portfolios in the 40-60% equity range do not have that kind of potential for damage in the bond portion Yeah, but they sure as hell have it in the other asset classes. Look at Japan vs other Portfolios and then look at the 1970's as well and the PP pretty well not only held up in ...

Re: Is the Permanent Portfolio Broken?

Total seat of my pants. It just seems to follow that every dip that is about 3-4k is followed by a gain and then it repeats. If I don’t take advantage of the dip the gain just seems to evaporate Yeah, I noticed how hard that pendulum has been swinging lately. There has been a lot of volatility that...

Re: Is the Permanent Portfolio Broken?

Which is why I use the high volatility of gold and long term treasuries to trade in and out ..if I don’t ,I find in the blink of an eye within a few days all the gains are now losses. Just the other day I sold Tlt in the morning and was up almost 3 or 4k in a matter of days of buying it , I would h...

Re: Signing Off - Peace, Out

if you want a safe space with no political discussions and only financial/consumer issues there is already a forum for that called Bogleheads. Whoa. The OP did not say that he was leaving because there were political discussions. He said: "At the end of the day I’m here for financial discussio...

Re: Signing Off - Peace, Out

@KBG +1 I, probably like you, only really come to this website anymore to see if one of a handful of posters has contributed anything new and of interest. It used to be pretty cerebral for investments. Years ago, the vibe seemed fairly unbiased in presenting information and more truth-seeking. Peopl...

Re: Is the Permanent Portfolio Broken?

For the record, I have nothing against the PP. I am merely trying to demonstrate that the “A-Ha” moment that people tend to experience when they finally “get it” in regards to the PP... well, there can be more “A-Ha” moments that make you realize things aren’t nearly as simple as HB would have liked...

Re: Is the Permanent Portfolio Broken?

This is why the PP will never be a Mainstream option: human hubris, folly & herd mentality will always prevent most Folks adoption of the strategy. It is supremely difficult to buy an Asset Class when it is loathed & supremely out of favor. Forced buying low and selling high sounds great in...

Democracy Sucks... Dictatorships Rule!

Instead of ANOTHER election thread on why Biden sucks or Trump sucks... where you guys spend countless hours trying to justify your views to others who you can't sway. Maybe consider that all of you are wrong? :o Anybody see the recent historical study out of Purdue? They compared different types of...

Re: Ray Dalio on Bonds

People like schiff or Jim rogers have been talking about hyperinflation for almost a decade and a half now though with nothing like that even on the horizon. Will it arrive someday? Maybe. Japan has been trying to get inflation going for nearly 30 years now. There are a lot of disinflationary force...

Re: Does it make sense to buy long bonds now?

MMT says that interest is corporate welfare. Why does anyone deserve risk free return. population growth is the only very low risk return (new people need loans for cars and homes) Fantastic point. Why does anyone deserve risk free return? I personally expect ZERO return. However, I know I need to ...

at least 2 to 2-1/2% in rates and even then I need to evaluate..it was a 40 year drop to get here ....the return trip back up may not stop for quite a long time . I don't see how we get back to higher rates at all considering the amount of debt in system and the way asset prices are tied to low rat...

FWIW, I don't put a lot of stock into investing based on short-term indicators. I think the current indicators are baked into the price. Even if they weren't... Re: Ray Dalio on Bonds

What I am getting at is have a documented mechanism in place to allocate out of LTT as yields decline, and back in as LTT yields go up... otherwise your emotions can easily get you lost at sea going forward. I know Im a little late to the party here. But from a systematic perspective, wouldn't it m...

Sorry, one more... government has made it very clear lately that people don’t have to pay their rent if they lack emergency savings. Uncle Sam basically said real estate investors will be the first to be sacrificed during tough economic periods. That definitely has to change the correlation dynamic ...

Interesting discovery Senecaaa, Whats your theory on why REITs perform so well? Hold the phone. Home loans get massively cheaper as yields drop, no? You simply get a lot more for your money. 18.45% Rate (Oct 1981) vs 3% (Now) on $300k 30 year fixed rate: $4,632 vs $1,265 per month for the SAME EXAC...

We don't have to follow the rules. Only the peasants do. Let's not pretend this is limited to Trump (or Republicans): -Lightfoot's haicut -Pritzker's daughter's equestrian participation -Pelosi's hiar blow out -Fauci at the ball game. -Etc No doubt. But he/they are openly blatant about it, and this...
