I always thought you were the K9 who used to hang with Doctor Who. I don't know if you use a Mac, smurff, but I'm lovin' these icons. http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/Personalize-Your-Macs-Desktop-By-Changing-Desktop-Icons.htm It's especially nice to have a tardis icon for Time Machine-dedi...

Re: Apple vs the NSA

My mom is ex-NSA and is completely unrepentant about the recent Verizon news. We've had some interesting conversations.  ;) That reminds me of the great line about never trying to explain something to a person whose livelihood (or retirement) depends on not understanding it. Haha. She hasn't been t...

Re: Apple vs the NSA

It really brought into focus the difference between the private sector and the government: one tries to persuade you that your life will be better if you exchange your money (AKA time) for products it has created for your enjoyment, while the other used naked, unmediated power to intrude on your li...

Re: Best way to buy long term treasuries

...   I am just trying to figure out of there was logic behind HB saying to sell them in 10 years or if it was maybe a bit arbitrary.  I would guess that selling 30 year treasuries after 5 years instead of 10 years would generate higher returns. I think it was a balance between (a) having something...

Re: Best way to buy long term treasuries

I think it best to avoid dogmatism with the PP. There are some areas where I have really strong convictions (like not substituting individual stocks for the equity part), but there are many people who index their LTTs including yours truly. And no I don't think it is heresy.  Further, I am pretty s...

Re: Municipal Bond Funds

Yes, outside of the pp I have some VPAIX . I assume that this investment is fed and state tax exempt. Is this the prime reason for holding the fund and if you dont mind me asking, have you considered exchanging the fund for the PP or reducing duration? Correct on both counts. I love the pp, but I h...

To the gentleman who posted the (now deleted?) question about patient (noun and adjective), they are in fact etymologically related.
I can see where you would view the noun as a euphemism. Makes sense!

Re: Best way to buy long term treasuries

Some people say that when you start your PP, you should buy all 30 year treasuries, and 10 years later, when they become 20 year treasuries, sell them and buy 30 year treasuries again. Hi Greg. It's not just that some people say this. It's canonical. Those were Harry Browne's instructions in his bo...

I've had a Terk HD antenna for about 9 years now since 2002. I thought I was so clever when I got it, and it really does perform well. However, when analog was phased out in the U.S., ABC lost their good spot in the spectrum and despite quadrupling the strength of their signal, I lost "Lost.&qu...

Re: President Vladimir Putin’s cruel tyranny is driven by paranoia

In any event divorce is a sin, Not really. I respect that people of certain faiths view it that way but for me it was a blessing. My ex and I are both happier now after "graduating" from each other. We're like old friends, and more importantly, I wouldn't have been free to meet my wife if...

I hadn't heard about the divorce. That's big news! How much of a jackass do you have to be to make a woman want to divorce you if you are the head of state of one of the most powerful and high profile nations in the world? Well, you have to be a big enough jackass to become the head of state of one ...

Re: Oh how it hurts to see no gains

Is this a good time to rebalance and take profits in stocks?  How frowned-upon is this type of market timing?  In other words, how badly could I screw up my returns assuming I timed everything very poorly... That looks like two very different questions (or 3), but you probably know the answer to th...
