Re: Out of balance

Way I look at it I would gladly by long term bonds to re balance , If interest rates keep rising and the value goes down I would just keep tax loss harvesting, No one can predict the future and things do not always go as expected. If the value keeps going down until it once again hit the lower re ba...

Re: Out of balance

If my portfolio were out of balance I would buy bonds in a heartbeat! I remember some years back when everyone was talking about interest rate hikes and how bonds were going down. I taxed loss harvested a bond position that I had, I sold tlt and immediately replaced it with the 50/50 split of edv an...

In my area I found a local dealer that is competitive, I agree not all are, I once walked out of a place when a dealer would not meet the price he quoted over the phone.

Re: Where and how do you purchase physical gold?

I like to purchase from local dealer where I pay with a personal check and can walk out with gold in hand. Maybe not walk out the same day as purchase but soon after.

Re: Any downside to bars?

I enjoy owning bars, and coins. The bars I have are Pamp Swiss, and they are beautiful, I also have a collection of Eagles and Buffalo coins. I do not see a downside to owning any gold. If the price goes down it goes down for all and that would not bother me either. In the past I sold online gold fo...

Re: Do you insure your Gold?

And also, Steve, do you have to update things with major changes in the price of gold or you just tell them how many oz coins you have? I insure my safe deposit box for a set amount for a set price. I do not have to tell them what is in the safe deposit box. If there is a bank robbery where the box...

I'm still 100% invested in PP, I re-balance when necessary. I do not post much anymore because there really is not much to say that hasn't been said.

Re: Any downside to bars?

I like bars and coins and have both, I do not see much of a downside. You can keep them in a safe deposit box and get insurance. If you get bars from a reputable dealer it should not be a problem.

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

Same here. As much as I detest what Sprott has done to Gold Trust I see no other option to maintain paper gold under favorable US capital gain taxation rules. My understanding is that shifting to GLD or IAU exposes to clearly spelled out 28% collectible tax rate, besides the ETF papers not being ba...

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

..and why would anyone want to sell their PHYS given that there is no difference whatsoever between it and GTU for tax or other purposes (besides redemption option, that is useless for most and doesn't affect US taxes) I sold just because I do not want to have anything to do with Sprott because of ...

Re: Do you insure your Gold?

I found them online some time ago.  It made sense, in that the Hugh Wood insurance doesn't care whether you have your coins in a safe deposit box or sitting in a bowl in your living room, but obviously there is a big difference in risk between the two - and your insurance costs should reflect that....

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

I sold my GTU to for a tax loss harvest, I was happy with GTU before Sprott got into the picture.  If I want online gold that I can convert to physical I will buy OUNZ http://www.merkgold.com/overview.html      or if I want to hold a gold ETF it will be either GLD or IAU.  IAU has lower exp...

Re: Confused when to rebalance

I start to watch my portfolio when I reach the 20/30 bands, as it gets closer to the 15/35 bands I look for opportunities like tax loss harvesting etc. I usually re-balance as it gets closer to the 15/35 but before it reaches it.  I enjoy re-balancing because then I can relax and go a long time with...

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

I held GTU for years and was quite happy until Sprott got into the picture. Discounts and premiums never bothered me because I follow the PP and it only benefited me. Not long ago I sold all my GTU for tax loss harvest purposes and picked up more physical bullion to add to my core gold and switched ...

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

I capitulated, I sold all my GTU that was held in taxable account to take advantage of a tax loss harvest, I bought IAU which has a low expense ratio. With Sprott extending the offer another time I thought this was a good time to get out. GTU expenses have been going up because of the Sprott hostile...

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

I would sell, too, except that I'd be selling at a big loss. Can't wait to dump all my paper gold shares when they break even, no matter who's at the helm. Selling at a loss is not always a bad thing if you can do a tax loss harvest. I also like to have real bullion which I call my core gold, but I...

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

I have been a long term GTU holder and hope that Sprott gives up, this attack is costing GTU unit holders additional expenses and are hampering with the smooth operation. It makes no sense to me for any long term GTU holder to agree and exchange to Sprott where they will pay more in expenses and hav...

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

Here's an interesting detail from the latest salvo from the GTU trustees in this battle, from http://archive.fast-edgar.com//20150616/A7AZP22C8Z2269ZK229E2ZZZG3EJZ2W2ZB72/: "Sprott has required that any GoldTrust Unitholder that wishes to tender to the Sprott Offer on a tax-deferred basis must...
