Re: Question About Gold and Taxes
I understand the capital gains collectable rate as a cap. If your regular tax rate is lower than the capital gain caps, you use your regular tax rate. http://www.irs.gov/publications/p17/ch16.html#d0e56153 If you figure your tax using the maximum capital gain rate and the regular tax computation res...

I haven't sold any myself but I can't imagine that could be true.

I assumed that they just made money on the spread.

whatchamacallit, Again, the proper accounting is found here: http://brown-blog-5.blogspot.com/2013/08/banking-example-41-quantitative-easing.html Thanks. That did help but I was trying to figure out where the reserves asset comes from right before the bond purchase. I know the Fed would have no use...

Re: Cullen Roche interview
Sorry to stir this up again but thanks for the replies. Here is how I am working it out in my head. It seems that before the Fed can proceed with QE, it basically gives itself a loan. This would allow for the asset to be created for the asset swap. Before QE Fed Assets Liabilities $10...

Re: Cullen Roche interview
I can't. I just can't tonight. Gumby? Haha, sorry. I feel this article is more accurate than the way Cullen is describing it. When the Federal Reserve creates new base money by buying Treasury bonds, via its QE3 program, the exact process works something like this: the Fed buys a bond from a priva...

Re: Favorite VP Investment?
It is limited on contribution amount but I like my ESPP (employee stock purchase plan) as my variable portfolio.
I sell it as soon as I can to hopefully capture ~18% gains (taxed as regular income) due to the 15% discount I get on the stock.

Around 10% VP which is just one position (VT). As for predicting the future, that's not my bag. I will however note that 2014 will be the 100th anniversary of a certain event that took a lot of people by surprise. Food for thought... I'm guessing you're referring to Henry Ford increasing the wage o...

pretty amazing
gold is down -27.01% year to date and the pp is only down -3.35%
even the negative returns of the pp are encouraging

Re: Holding TLT in Vanguard Brokerage Services?
I guess you probably have your reasons for using TLT instead of individual bonds but it is very easy to buy individual bonds through vanguard. I had never bought bonds before and did so through vanguard very easily. They even calculate their current value each day for you as you hold them. The one p...

Re: Switzerland referendum on citizens dividend
I am at the point where I think this is a good idea. If you are going to have welfare, then make it fair by giving the same to all. If your not going to have welfare, then the homestead act needs to be brought back so you can at least have the opportunity to provide for yourself. The way I see it, i...

I am accumulating but I also like ns2 add to stock through 401k contributions so it was above 25% when cash went over 35%.
I still have to buy bonds and gold now to bring them up to 25%.

record high of 1,782.00
Let us see where it goes from here...
It was cash that triggered the rebalance, not s&p 500.

I saw it in IMAX 3D as well and really enjoyed it. I don't go to the movies very often so I figured I would go all out. I was afraid it was going to be too intense going into it but I was able to keep my eyes on the screen. There was a survival movie called Frozen http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1323045...

Re: Golden Balls
Cool idea but I imagine the show lost its intrigue quickly.
They probably pick their contestants based on their low credit scores so they are desperate.
I would have a hard time lying at any point in the game but I do like the ending where the guy lies about picking the steal ball.

I agree that Monetary Realism is a description and not a theory. It is not there to accomplish anything, just describe what is happening. Here are some examples of descriptions and theories (things we have seen happen and things we haven't seen happen): Descriptions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat...

It looks to me that fidelity blocked access from google's servers.
