Re: Why $16 Trillion Only Hints at the True U.S. Debt

I'll admit that I am not yet able to fully grasp some of the concepts in these replies. They seem so... conceptual.  :) I get bogged down in the practical problem of X retirees expecting $Y from Z workers and the whole thing just not adding up. I understand that "unfunded liabilities" are ...

Why $16 Trillion Only Hints at the True U.S. Debt

WSJ article:

Why $16 Trillion Only Hints at the True U.S. Debt

I realize there are a lot of different opinions about this sort of thing.  Any comments?  How does this get resolved... or why is it not an issue?

Re: Poll - Smartphones

I have also been looking at Ting recently and it sounds like a great deal.  I agree that it appears to be a better option than Republic Wireless (and also backed by a larger parent - Tucows) Cellular data usage seems to be the determining factor.  With Ting, you will pay more for cellular data than ...

I was interested in this sort of thing (for some VP money) but was disappointed to see that it's not available to residents of certain states (Indiana in my case).  Does anyone know what state regulations cause an issue?

But, worrying about a "weaker" dollar is a waste of everyone's time — particularly when you have a Permanent Portfolio. Maybe the dollar will be weaker five years from now. Maybe it will be stronger. We just don't know. Whatever happens, the sun will rise and my dog will want to go for a ...

Re: Firestorm Erupts Over Virginia's Education Goals

I was an engineer in college (minor electrical engineering) and over half (perhaps it was 2/3) of the people in the electrical engineering classes were Asian.  I'm not totally sure why, but suspect it is because they worked their asses off, and their parents and I think culture encouraged that.  So...

I don't think so.  Not that (generally speaking) the Republicans are going to be trying to raise taxes anyway.

Kind of funny... in Indiana the Republicans achieved a super majority, and they are saying the same thing.

Guess we'll see how it works out.

Re: how many here read the IBD, and truly understand it?

CANSLIM is not a hands-off, buy-and-hold strategy... an important component is to sell stocks when they drop 8%.  That requires frequent attention. But as we know from the PP strategy, stocks perform well under certain circumstances, not all circumstances.  And a particular stock strategy will perfo...

Kurt Harris has a good framework... work your way down the list as best you can, or see fit. http://www.archevore.com/get-started/ Many of the "gurus" seem to make a point that we shouldn't sweat the really small stuff.  I would say that if you're making even a modest effort you're way ahe...

Re: how many here read the IBD, and truly understand it?

How many have read the publisher, William Oneil,'s book HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN STOCKS?  how about Peter Lynche's books? A long time ago, in a galaxy far away (the early 1990's) I worked for a small investment management firm where we made people quite a bit of money with CANSLIM.  But that was then, ...

For what it's worth, I started with a 4x25 and I let my contributions go to cash.  It's been almost a year and I haven't hit a rebalancing band yet.  How often you have to rebalance will depend on the total size of your account and the size of your contributions.  Personally, I felt like it made mor...

I felt similarly late last year, jumped in anyway, and the water's been fine.  The PP is an anti-market timing strategy, so why try to time it? That said, I would encourage you to spend more time around the forums, and finish reading Fail Safe Investing and the new PP book.  There's no rush, and it'...

why not buy t-bills? they trade free at fidelity and vanguard The FUD factor, most likely. Fidelity Cash Options?

I have a 401k at Fidelity with a brokerage window. FDLXX is mentioned in the new PP book as a good fund for cash, and I have some of that already. Are there other good options, like perhaps FSBIX? It's been mentioned here on the forum a time or two, but not real recently. IIRC, it has a lower expens...

Wonder how they factored in the fact that some states don't have football and/or baseball teams. Or the fact that there are far more baseball games than football games?

The book is great, but I think that in most situations like this people require something that fits on a postcard.  Maybe half of a postcard.  It might have been easier to just suggest taking a percentage of the reserves and heading to Vegas.

Hide your liquid assets in any legal way you can! It really matters. PS- Except for this one line, your advice is beyond excellent. Perhaps you could elaborate on how you can use both 'hide' and 'legally' [ethically?] in that sentence? For instance, buying a crap-load of gold coins and hiding them ...

I might not be doing it "right" but I let my contributions go into cash, then rebalance when needed.  Depending on the size of your portfolio, the size of your contributions, and the fluctuation of other assets, you might not have to rebalance as often as you might think. I realize that so...
