Re: Financial Planning Software

Do folks here have preferred software for financial planning (e.g., running retirement scenarios)? I've used Silver Planner but it didn't seem ideal for modeling investments like gold. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks! actual safe withdrawal safe withdrawal rate calculators are based on the wors...

Re: Stock and ETF brokerage costs plunge

Keep in mind that the fidelity zero expense funds follow their own index not the standard ones like s&p or Wilshire. They would have to pay to use the standardized indexes so they created their own ...I own fzrox and it is pretty close

The problem with taxing the shareholders is the same dollar earned by the corporation making millions of dollars would be taxed anywhere from zero to the top brackets based on personal tax rate

Re: Investment locations?

i go by the research from michael kitces as far as location goes . as kitces found : " the traditional asset location strategy “rule of thumb” is that tax-inefficient bonds go into an IRA, while equities eligible for preferential tax rates go into a brokerage account, the reality is that for in...

Re: Investment locations?

Dividend payers are a case which isn't quite the Permanent Portfolio's S&P 500. My remarks don't treat high dividend stocks. Yeah, RMDs... Another problem when the IRA gets too large, another reason not to put growth assets in the IRA. RMDs will force you to sell gold even if you don't want to....

Re: Investment locations?

one of the problems we end up with thinking we will place our dividend paying stocks in a taxable account is depending on the length of time you will own it even a 2% dividend over time wipes out any tax advantage if you are not in the zero capital gains bracket . plus any other distributions make i...

Re: Investment locations?

I would not waste valuable space in tax deferred accounts to hold any interest bearing instruments with no potential for large gains at any where near these levels .that space is way to valuable to take up with investments that pay so little

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

tyler , with 40 of those 50 years actually in a down trend in rates i think the high correlations we see when rates rise may play out very differently ... those speed bumps the last 50 years were really just that as rates continued lower and lower right up until today . in my opinion i dont think we...

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

yes , the issue is the behavior that is recommended to be used is ironic ... the irony is that it is an all weather portfolio designed never to have a bad time so to speak .. but human nature being what it is tends to do what feels good many times and not what is the best logically or financially . ...

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

ha ha ha , for a portfolio that is supposed to eliminate timing and the guess work , that is just what is required then to buy in if you do that ... where is buying low ? we all thought low in 2008 was when the market fell 2000 points ..who know we had 4000 more to go .... the problem is introducing...

For those of you who have FULLY embraced the Permanent Portfolio and made your investment all at once can you reveal where...

Re: 10 Year Treasury in ETFs

Long term treasuries can be very volatile because they trade like stocks would , based on fear ,greed and perception..you can combine a long term treasury fund and a shorter term one and you would expect it to behave like an intermediate term bond fund . But it usually does not .....the longer term ...

Re: Question on using Desert Portfolio as savings

I am currently using the Desert Portfolio as my savings vehicle: 60% IEF 10% AAAU 15% MTUM 15% USLV I am saving all of my spouse's paychecks each month in anticipation of buying a vacation home in 2-3 years (2 years being the absolute quickest it could happen). What are everyone's opinions on the r...

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

it is not the issue of it being at a high . in this case the pp has very little history with rising rates as a trend the last 40 years ... that is my concern . we had from the 1980's what amounted to speed bumps not trends in rising rates . it is rising rates that can be the pp's kryptonite . those ...

Kind of like the company that had a very low profit margin , so they planned on making it up on volume.. then they need to process many more orders and employ more people with higher expenses ,more work and less margin

plus not only are gold and rates joined at the hip but we have equities at a high at the same time ... that makes for some wild moves in the pp which can be right on par with high equity portfolio volatility wise . yesterday we saw a .70% move in the pp with gold losing almost 2% and bonds losing 1...

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

for most of the pp history , except for some speed pumps along the way , the trend was for rates to fall . The 1970's were one helluva speed bump. ;) https://i1.wp.com/www.neilkearney.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Historical_Interest_rates_aug_2012.png?resize=645%2C463&ssl=1 FWIW, the PP did j...
