Re: Bernanke: FED commited to Stimulus
Because everyone thinks they are "above average" and will ride the myth on a unicorn until the emperor sees he has no clothes. :P Could you flesh this out a little bit more for us? I'm not really sure what you mean by all this. I certainly could "think I'm above average" and be in the inflationi...

Congrats to TennGaPa.
I have only one question: Will TennGaPa only moderate posts that come from his namesake states?

Re: Figuring Out Religion
My comments are a bit off the current theme of the thread (Santa Claus, child beatings, etc.) but I hope additive. I sometimes ponder why for many of our problems we tend to do the following: * Medical issues - seek a skilled doctor, * Home repair issues - seek a plumber, electrician, roofer, carpe...

Re: Duck Dynasty in Hot Water
Under scripture the Inquisition is not only justifiable, but obligatory. It is evil to stop short of any means necessary to redeem sinners, even torturing them to death. God didn't include a provision for chickening out. ... I have no doubt the indirect suicides happened as described in MT's link...

I also am a proponent of unbrella insurance - low cost and high value. I hope I never have to use it. I also have heard from reputable sources (I do not remember now who they were as I've had umbrella insurance for quite a while) that you should insure for about 2X your net worth to cover the friv...

Re: Death By Medicine
The most stunning statistic, however, is that the total number of deaths caused by conventional medicine is nearly 800,000 per year. It is now evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the US. Add to that 800,000 the average of 1,325,000/year lives lost to...

I understand that Barack and Michelle will not be attending the opening ceremonies of the winter Olympics in Sochi, probably as a protest against Validmir Putin's stance on gay rights and that our official entourage will include two openly gay athletes as a kind of in-your-face gesture. How do we k...

Re: Duck Dynasty in Hot Water
I can't figure out the whole "War on Christmas" outrage. Why would anyone want the word "Christmas" associated with the frantic consumerism at the shopping mall anyway? I'm happy to let Santa Claus and "Happy Holidays" be associated with that mess. I think the anger is mostly about people needin...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
The Bible says that God is a very present help in time of trouble (Psalm 46:1) I assert that this is not true. Why do you feel that way? Simply anecdotal evidence - and you can actually look to the book of Job in the Bible to see what I'm saying. Was God a very present help in the time of Job's tro...

On a side note, am I the only getting killed with 403 Errors? The odds of getting anywhere on the forum without 20 or more clicks seem poor lately. Re: Figuring Out Religion
I'm really not sure, Mountaineer, how you would deal with a prophet who makes predictions for 100 years from now. There are other ways mentioned in Scripture to identify false prophets besides "their prophecies come true", but realistically, if you do not go for the three solas I mentioned in my ju...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
How am I supposed to figure out factually what happened when the only records of these events are religious texts written by people who believed that the predictions came true? Was Jesus resurrected, for example? The dudes who pieced together the new testament sure seemed to think so, but how can I...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
One way to spot a false prophet is to see if the prophecy comes true, pretty much always. Check out some of the ones you mentioned other than the Judeo-Christian ones plus Jesus ... they really don't "cut the mustard" from everything I've managed to read about them and what they predicted. ... Re: Figuring Out Religion
Most commentators view the word "god" in vs. 34 refers to the leaders of Israel, e.g. the judges. The main point of this passage is that the Jews wanted to be their own God ... i.e. thinking they knew more about Jesus than God did. Similar to today. ... Mountaineer I don't quite get that. I pretty much agree with Pointedstick's "Who Cares?" Bottom line is we are all sinners and sinners sin. Like dogs who do what dogs do and people get upset. No surprises here. Phil was just quoting what the Bible says and got "burned", just like many Bible supporters do and many non-Bible support...

I don't think that you tap into "it" , but instead realize that you ARE "it". In other words, you come to the realization that you are the universe experiencing yourself through your own eyes. And out of curiosity, how do Christians generally interpret John 10:34? The Jews answered Him, "For a good...

2. After 30 years of being a strict believer, I started studying philosophy, logic and ethics. I came to a 100% or 99.9% confident belief in rational proof of secular ethics, human self-ownership and individual rights. The concept of a God, whether Christian variety or any other violates those prin...
