Re: cash as an underperform asset that could get rid of.

Just a few thoughts on what you are proposing, Arturo: 1) Almost everyone ponders lowering the cash portion of the PP. 2) Lots of people juice their cash returns with a portion invested in savings bonds, slightly longer duration treasuries or whatever. 3) IF you are relatively young and still accum...

Re: Stocks and Bonds Decline

I have had no problems, upon my request he supplied me with a reference in my metro area who verified that he also had a good experience. Maybe gold is loss-leader for his advisory service, which is darned expensive . COSTCO breaks even on food, makes it up in memberships. That sort of thing. He has...

Everyone has problems managed across taxable and tax deferred. The guvmint does not help us, nor do corp benefit plans.

Re: Obamacare is Repealed or 1937 Redux?

Well after this October when the new enrollment period starts, they will request your next year's estimated income.  So if you're still unemployed, I believe you will be able to put down $0 for wages and thus qualify.  And Medicaid too if your state expanded it. I will be working again fairly soon....

I made too much money for the exchanges, yes. And I am unemployed. Both of those nice things.

MG, while on the subject of gold mining stocks, I don't know much about them. Would a safer, more boring way to play the sector be to buy NEM or PSAU? What's you gut feel as to when the bottom could be?

Re: Stocks and Bonds Decline

Actually, the distinction between the PP and VP is artificial in this case. Yes, you only have ONE portfolio... everything you own, and everything you owe, plus insurances, plus the amount you earn (and likelihood of being unemployed), and your future health liabilities, liabilities to family, the ...

Yes, just think of all the inventions and startups for which we can thank welfare recipients! If George H. W. Bush and Gerald Ford are RINOs, then yes, I am a RINO. Ronald Reagan would be pilloried today by the Tea Party for some of the actions he took as President. He would never have gotten re-no...

No. Chicago Machine Politics. Reward your friends, punish your enemies. Texas is his enemy. NASA in Houston did not get any of the actual space shuttles, even though Houstonians died on two shuttle missions. Obama could make the problem go away in an instant by allowing export of oil.  Will he?

Really, the time is now. This is capitulation blow-out, with a time lag, too

I can tell you from personal experience, morale within these companies is completely in tatters . Managers have completely capitulated. They see no future in their own industry. They are in a fetal position in their offices crying. They have possibly oversold, they have possibly overcorrected on the...

Re: Welfare Makes America More Entrepreneurial

Now that I have a reasonable quality (but expensive) post-Obamacare private marketplace insurance, I'm thinking of starting my own business after being let go from a Fortune 500 in the oilfield sector last week. If I couldn't have gotten it, I'd have had to try to bury my talents (again) in the hal...

After being laid-off last week, I bought Blue Cross Blue Shield in the private marketplace online in a few minutes. It was expensive. If you have less than 25% physical gold, this is going to happen to you on this Forum. http://militantlibertarian.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Salem-Witch-Trials.jpg 5% is hardly a PP, 10% is acceptable as I too only hold 1/10 of my portfolio in gold. 10% is acceptable according to you, but is def...

I will be "all in" when gold is $850. Not a moment sooner. If it even goes below $1000, I will be "more in". Right now, I'm at 11%. Rest evenly divided cash, stocks, bonds. Is that speculating? I carry a gun, is that speculating?

And those certain times can be very long. Yes, we're all used to $4+ coffee by now... but if someone offered you a $12 coffee, you'd refuse it! You'd wait for the price to normalize. Problem with gold is that wait time can be extended; but we hit it in real terms in early 1970s and 2001 and maybe ag...

Is there a Health Savings Account available to an individual for PP?

I recently lost my job.  :'(  Oil industry, Texas, I still need to shelter income for tax year 2015, the severance was pretty large (I'm not totally unhappy... technically, I could retire. But of course, I won't at my age). So, I'm looking for a low-cost financial institution I could access as an in...
