I've been accumulating IJH (mid-cap index) and IJR (small-cap index) on every dip.

Any kayak enthusiasts here?

Hi all,

I'm going to buy my first kayak and wondered if anyone has any recommendations?  From my research I'm leaning toward the Wilderness Ride 115 model.  I like its ability to stand up in it.  Primary use will be in the Tampa Bay ocean water for recreation and fishing.

Thanks.

Re: Let me guess, everything's great!

If the above makes sense more or less, then we are really just talking about percentages and a lot of people tweak their PP percentages so that they hold more of one or two assets. The 25% bands are not intended to be a religion, right? Well said Barrett.  I don’t believe the 25% bands are a religi...

Re: What to do? Another rookie wonders HBPP or PRPFX?

I'm curious what others think of Tyler's suggestion of VWINX? I don't know much about that fund but I have seen a lot of you post good things about it in other threads. Looks like it was down 25% or so in the crash of 2008, so not as bad as a straight equity fund. I just mention that because Neo16 ...

Re: The "Opposite" Portfolio

Ad Orientem - I'm don't mean individual stocks, I'm talking about indexes.  I don't know any portfolio that use individual stocks. If you buy a bond index (BND) or stock index (VTI) or any commodity index (CRBQ) you'll keep up with inflation.  If you keep all your money in cash you're GUARANTEED to ...

Re: The "Opposite" Portfolio

I think the worst portfolio would be 100% cash.  All other assets at least keep up with inflation.

Re: Any Idea How Many People Use The PP Strategy?

Perhaps the number of PP "purists" is low, but I do think many people have created their own version of the PP, in accordance with their own risk tolerance.  For example, a Boglehead portfolio + 10% gold, or something similar.  I’ve created my own cashless version which suits me:  http://w...

Re: Replacing Cash with VWINX, the results look juicy

Rocketdog - thanks for your feedback.  I have looked at VWELX and its a good fund, in fact it was on my shortlist when I decided to abandon the cash portion.  Ultimately I went with VWINX because it held up much better in the 2008 meltdown.  VWINX was only down -9%, while VWELX was down -22%.  Also ...

Re: Replacing Cash with VWINX, the results look juicy

TNT - Excellent points.  Exactly why protecting from heavy down years is so important.  Unfortunately many people believe if they lose 30% in their stock fund and the next year its up 30%, they've broke even.  But that's not how the math works.

Fish - thanks for your suggestion.  Yes that's fine if you want to substitute International and VTI with VT.

Personally I won’t, because I view Emerging Markets as a speculation.  The only International I want to own are developed nations.

Re: Replacing Cash with VWINX, the results look juicy

Hi TNT, I prefer some international for global diversification.  I don’t think the volatility is too bad because the Juicy PP's worst year was only -4.92%. I created the Juicy PP for myself.  It fits my own personal goals and objectives perfectly, but everyone is different.   Everyone is welcome to ...

Re: Replacing Cash with VWINX, the results look juicy

TNT - I posted the returns per decade on my website http://www.tightwadweb.com/customportfolio.html But to answer your question, here's the Juicy PP yearly average returns for those two periods: 2000-2013  +8.40% 2008-2013  +9.16% And BTW, yesterday I rebalanced my RothIRA into my Juicy PP and feel ...

Desert - yes, that's it.  Thanks for your results, they match mine results perfectly.  Good to know my spreadsheet data analysis is accurate. I’m in the same boat, trying to figure out the best portfolio for me, which I believe is the PP, but I just can't swallow the cash portion (at least during my...

Re: Replacing Cash with VWINX, the results look juicy

Xan - I have back-tested a cashless 3x33% (VTI/TLT/GLD) and the returns are 8.5%.  So it underperforms my custom VWINX allocation which returns 9.7%. I guess it all depends on how you view your cash.  I don't consider my checking account cash to be part of my retirement account because its not inves...

Re: Replacing Cash with VWINX, the results look juicy

Thanks everyone for your feedback. TNT - thanks for your comments on the 5% Pimco allocation I had.  I agree with your assessment and I removed it.  I just added a 10% international weighting and updated the results on the website, it looks really good. I'm going to rebalance my RothIRA with this to...

Replacing Cash with VWINX, the results look juicy

Hi all, I made a modification to my PP and I’d like your feedback.  I've replaced the cash portion with VWINX. I know, more risk, go easy on me.  I know its PP heresy, but I can't help it, the back tested results look too juicy. I don't feel I need the cash portion, its dragging the whole PP down.  ...

This is a great book, I read it years ago.  Keep in mind Darvas was stock picking during a long-term stock market boom, so just about any system works well in that environment.
