Re: Early Retirement

There is a HUGE need for this for EXACTLY people with your intent -- to first provide a service and while secondarily hopefully generating some form of income for yourself. Question now nearly six years later is....did you ever do this? I know you are still a regular contributor to the forum and I ...

Re: The political re-alignment of our time

1. Trade wars with China and Mexico, derailing our fragile economy (and the fragile world economy) 2. A policy of torture, perhaps even worse than what we saw under W ("much worse than water boarding") 3. Ban on muslims entering the U.S., which much like gun laws, simply results in only t...

Re: The Left is Eating Itself Pt. II

Nice! Of course Biden's lap dogs (or Vinny's lap cats ;) ) won't care. https://nypost.com/2020/01/18/how-five-members-of-joe-bidens-family-got-rich-through-his-connections/ Au contraire! Me and my three cats are solidly AGAINST Biden! If it came down to him against Trump, if they could vote, they'd...

Re: College is Overrated

Thanks for your input, PS & WiseOne! WiseOne, I like the idea of internships and am trying to push our daughter in that direction for this summer (the one between her junior and senior years of high school). PS, I'll go with options 1,3 & 4! I love the idea of gap years and think they can a...

Re: Early Retirement

Wow!  Sounds great.  Any big plans? Good question...how about initial reactions for now. :-) 1. Four generation cruise (almost didn't happen as my father had a quad bypass three weeks ago, but he is progressing well and can go) 2. Landscapping a new home where I'm relocating to Too young to do noth...

Re: Early Retirement

OK that's it, no more early retirement for me!  Today is a total loss so might as well make frivolous posts, to say that: My department chair called me into his office (causing much anxiety) to tell me he is going to start me through the tenure process !!!  Holy bejesus...did not see this coming.  ...

Re: Early Retirement

I feel like retirement is a worse-case scenario. It's kind of like saying "I never found a way to make money that I really enjoyed so I saved enough to stop". ... I plan to never retire. That helps me focus on short-term goals which are vastly, vastly easier to acheive because they are ne...

Re: Why do you use the PP?

Having a PP and a VP is like being a devout Christian with a mistress on the side!!!  ;D FYI, the fall in long term bonds and risk of further declines, and the astounding deadness of gold, has stopped me out of the HBPP totally . When gold was non-responsive to Grexit, I knew all of the goldbuggery...

I have mathjak on the ropes! Almost ten minutes have passed since my last post. I can smell victory! :) you already know my feeling . the pp will not be a pleasant place to be if rates continue to rise  as that leveraged bond position will always be behind the curve by a lot no matter how much you ...

Re: Given the U.S. fiscal situation, should military spending change (how much?)

I just voted for the first time. I thought for certain my vote was going to be the great outlier. I was shocked to see that my vote fell among the great majority! 62%. I guess that I was considering this to be a conservative group who generally want small government except for seemingly unlimited am...

It's great to be young and know everything; I remember it well. Now I'm old and I realize I don't know everything. But I do know that having a solid financial position is very nice, not least because it lets you work on your own projects rather than having to work on someone else's. But your not kn...

If Buddtholomew did not exist, this forum would have to invent him. Keeping a perpetual worrier around lets the rest of us see just how ridiculous it is to try to micro-manage the Permanent Portfolio Thanks, Bud. Re: Is the PP going to hold up?

Greetings, It is useful revisiting those threads—way back to the olden days—and what it felt like living through those times. If one did not fret over the dailies, the experience was and remains, dust in the wind… Volatile parts, sure. Valuations too rich, I suppose. Too funky, yep. But portfolio-a...

Awesome, thanks PH. Can't believe you did so much of that manually. That chart should be a permanent fixture somewhere on this forum. Would hate to see it get buried someday. Re: New PPer needs guidance.

Welcome Matthew, When to begin the PP always presents a dilemma. One or more of the asset groups may seem overvalued while other asset groups are tanking and looking for a bottom. I just jumped in December 2014 and allotted my 25% to the four asset groups and I have not looked back. I checked this ...

Re: New PPer needs guidance.

I would personally worry less about a falling knife in the PP since it has three other bandages at the ready.   And don't forget it sounds like the OP is not sitting in cash but is heavy on miners.  A timely transition may be prudent. FWIW, with that level of assets I'd primarily be concerned with ...

My dirty little secret is that since the start of this thread I figured out how to fully automate the process. As long as the returns data is available, this is easy.  If anyone has a special request, send me a PM.  No promises on a fast response but I'll see what I can do.  If I get enough request...

Re: Worst 3 year PP performance ever?

There's no doubt stocks have intoxicating runs if you're lucky enough to live in the right decade.  Just remember that a 100% gain after a 45% loss only gets you back to just above where you started.  Assuming you stuck around.  No exaggeration. I must have read at least a 100 times a variation of ...
