Re: The Dems Set Some of the Darnedest Precedents
whether or not the HBPP is the optimal portfolio, Fail Safe Investing is a classic that should be required reading for HB's insights on money and investing as a part of life.

Re: The Dems Set Some of the Darnedest Precedents
But in your perseveration over the title of my post, you're missing my point entirely. Which is that Mattis' decision to not only break rank but to utilize his position of command to sabotage a sitting president--and to potentially deseat him--amounts to a quintessential insurrection that has opene...

Re: The Dems Set Some of the Darnedest Precedents
Not that my endorsement means anything, but Vinny is one of the most non-partisan members of this forum. He even avoids being boxed into the "libertarian contrarian" box that is more common around here than in the wild. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a entrenched bureaucratic machine ...

That's unsurprising given what I've heard over the past year, but a disappointing since they were great fifteen years ago when I was first getting into investing and trying to set thing sup.

Re: Permanent Broker
I use both (Vanguard for IRA's, Fidelity for taxable and HSA's). Both are fine. I think I slightly prefer the additional info on Fidelity, but nothing that would tempt me to go through the hassle of moving my vanguard accounts to Fido. Plus I wouldn't feel particularly great if all of my investments...

Re: Solution for those on the fence between bogle or browne
Hahah half 60/40-half HBPP. I dig it. For my kids' 529s I just do the Vanguard target date funds - accurate to their age. I thought it's not the end of the world to rely a bit on conventional wisdom. 42.5 US TSM 20 ITT 12.5 LTT 12.5 STT 12.5 Gold That said... it wouldn't be a big step to take that p...

Yup that's it. She just prefers the stability of cash and isn't worried about opportunity cost or inflation.

Re: Joypog's regularly changing AA (originally "The Desert Looking Glass Portfolio")
New Year's update: Two tweaks 1) My small allocation in wacky investments is going into Managed Futures, a mix of DBMF, CTA, and KMLM. We'll see how that goes. 2) The Wife made it clear she strongly prefers cash...so it looks like my AA will be more like Half Speculative - 16% each in US-TSM, US-SCV...

Makes sense to go for a true barbell when one isn’t constrained by past purchases in taxable accounts and/or 401k options.

Re: Huh, 1/N Asset Allocation is Quite Robust
Although holy tracking error — IIRC, SCV hasn’t kept up with SP500 until quite recently Yeah... that's the game with highly volatile products. Paul Merriman has a chart that compares various strategies. And a SCV+SP500 pairing ends up consistently being perfectly mediocre - never first, never last....

Re: Huh, 1/N Asset Allocation is Quite Robust
Interesting. That's pretty much what I settled on 1/n of US LCG, US SCV, Intl SCV, Gold, LTT, and STT (I'm doing a barbell for the bonds because we're still thinking about buying a house so I like having the "ready-cash" for a down payment) It works for me because it's simple and it focuse...

Have you watched Graveyard of the Fireflies? It’s really good and soulcrushingly sad. No. Have never heard of it. In general, I prefer my eyes to be reading rather than watching. Take in much more information that way. What is "Graveyard of the Fireflies"? It's a feature length animation ...

3 years ago, Tod's workshop did a great arrows vs breastplate video. Now they've done the top half altogether. Just brilliant, both of the main videos as well as the ancillary ones. ALL worth watching.

1) $44 BILLLION, not $44 million 2) The NBA was even worst off than the NFL. I remember way back around 1980 when the NBA was so unpopular that their finals were not even shown live but were, instead, shown at 11:30 PM on tape delay! Now it is wildly poplular all over the world. 1) thanks for the c...

Re: How did YOU vote???!!
If Elon decides to antagonize his liberal base… He’s just allowing people they don’t like to say things they disagree with. Letting Trump back onto the platform is one thing. The screenshot posted by vnatale is taking a victory lap-trolling-antagonizing-sore winning. It's totally his right since he...

Re: How did YOU vote???!!
Again, my reaction was that those people were guilty of gross overreaction. Where else should one indulge in meaningless apocalyptic fantasies, if not Twitter! That said, Twitter is in precarious place. Overall, it was already an underperforming social media platform, but it maintained the position...

It was fun! Not as hilarious as the week before when all the fake verified accounts got released. But still a good spectacle. I wonder how many more events Elon can manufacture after the World Cup stops boosting his traffic numbers. In the meantime, I hope all the engineers that were laid off / resi...

haha funny! I don't particularly care if Trump is on Twitter or not...but I had gotten bored of following the Elon-show. I also realized how much time it was wasting when I could have been doing something more creative (playing music or blogging). So last night I logged off of Twitter on all my devi...

So if you’re someone that thinks the GOPe is the problem, should you keep voting for their candidates? Or is a strategic retreat (D win) the better option? I don’t have the answer but it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. Isn't that the basic conundrum for BOTH factions of the Republica...

Who here would support their children or nieces and nephews bring sent to fight Russia? Do you draw the line there? We are at war with Russia, but currently by proxy. Please, tell me more about how corrupt and disgusting the political world of Ukraine is. It’s very Russian…and public apologies. Sometimes my writing gets strident and obnoxious. Re: John Mauldin on Crypto
Thanks for sharing this. Great essay. I had followed Maudlin for a while but his constant bearishness was a bit of a turnoff over time. HB's approach of "we just don't know, so let's own a bit of each" was much more empowering for my psychology. That said, I love this line. I think I'm gon...
