Re: Gold will rise when Fed stops raising interest rates?

Everyone needs to find a way to invest in sync with their personality. Yeah, that was my big takeaway from my months of trying to find an AA. As is often the case, the exercise was one of staring at ourselves until something clear came up. We landed at a 50% stock portfolio...but given our circumst...

Jonathan Tjarks, a basketball reporter, just passed away at the young age of 34. He wrote two articles about his disease and his faith. The first discusses his diagnosis, and the second discusses his family. Powerful stuff, especially the one about his son. The Long Night of the Soul Does my Son Kno...

Joypog, There have been extensive discussions on this board about the subject of nutrition, calories, paleo, primal, intermittent fasting, collagen, blue zones, vegan/vegetarian vs carnivore, insulin, glucagon, on and on. Some knowledgeable people here, or were here. Maybe a separate thread if the ...

Re: Putin Invades Ukraine II

Interesting commentary on NPR from a Russian professor on faculty at Johns Hopkins. Apparently there is a widely watched television program in Russia that went way into the danger zone recently talking about the war being a mistake and needing to end. He says on the show, they can comment so long a...

Re: Alcohol and Nutrition

Both told me that the key to losing weight is not exercise (though that is great for your body overall) but what you eat and how much you eat. Really a totally simple equation. All comes down to caloric intake. Unless you are some kind of fanatical physical person physical activity does not use up ...

The majority of voters are ignorant and will vote themselves into communism. We live in a republic and Newsom violated our constitutional rights of religion and assembly with his curfews and house arrest. All while the overflow hospital facilities stayed empty We had patients in a makeshift parking...

Re: Alcohol and Nutrition

I've basically stopped drinking alcohol altogether, though it wasn't a conscious decision, I just didn't enjoy it anymore. Probably just getting old. This December will be 48 years for me. I was never even close to an alcoholic and I only drank for 2 1/2 years, not even starting until I was 21 even...

Public unions can agree to vote for candidate X, if candidate X gives them a raise. Any why not, tax dollars are unlimited. Starbucks can explain to the union that they'll all go broke if wages go over $X How do we weaken public unions without violating freedom of assembly Umm...without unions, can...

Actually, I don't understand why GLD still exists with it's fairly high ER of 0.40. The only advantage of GLD is the bid/spread ask and trading volume - this is great for traders, but irrelevant for long-term investors. I remember hearing some podcast that said GLD is better for people who play aro...

Re: Scarce and high priced energy in Europe

The wood stove example is not a very good one for purposes of discussion (at least in the context of a hermit in the woods who requires very little else to be happy) because the impact of that use is not even comparable to the combined impacts of the typical modern urban lifestyle featuring $70,000...

But perhaps unions there have more influence for some reason that I wouldn't know. IL's Dem politicians are super beholden to the public sector unions that have kept them in power for decades. If the unions are such a small percentage of the working population (as discussed earlier) but hold outsiz...

On flip side, how would you respond to the argument that giving you the freedom to use a wood stove will result in pollution that they are forced to breathe? " Giving me the freedom?" You claim "those people" hold others in disdain . You believe this disdain is a bad trait, worthy of judgement. You hold of "those people" in disdain . Your assessment of those people seems very similar to this statement: They tend to view those who do not agree with them as ignorant and/or unwilling to see the truth. . As such how do you avoid this "identity trap" yourself? This is the "identity trap" described by Harry Browne. Other people are s...

What's most obvious to me: (1) That there is a group of people who want to believe that there is a Garden of Eden in which every want can be fulfilled without any corresponding cost. These generally are NOT the people who live simple, low-impact lives. They want all of the perks of modern living, i...
