You've lost the $1000 either way. The question is whether you'll get the tax advantages.

Why wouldn't you want to lock in losses? Usually, people try to lock in losses for the tax advantages.

Re: Interesting Article - One Final Bailout That Still Might Happen (homeowners)
I was just recently looking at a 0% credit card offer and thinking "this would have to be a negative APR offer to make it worth my while" (i.e. they would pay me)

Re: Automatic rebalancing -- good idea?
Historically, there have been only a handful of (annual) rebalancing events in the PP's 40-year life. Perhaps when you're DCA'ing into the PP or transitioning it might be helpful, but once you're all in it really just works by itself. I count 12 rebalancing events between 1972 and 2008 (based on ...

Re: Rebalancing gold
You're not alone, budd. I have been watching the entire portfolio, as opposed to assets in isolation, an guess what? The entire portfolio is down. viewing the portfolio as a Package doesn't change that fact or make it easier to handle the swings. Speculation about gold pulling down the portfolio i...

Re: Today's Earthquake and the Importance of Geographic Diversification
I have to agree -- particularly about the compromised accounts. I always thought that there must be some level of assets at which you would not have an online brokerage account. Even if you use multiple brokerages, all it would take is one keylogger on your computer to compromise them. Certainly,...

Re: Fear ??
Yeah, I mean more than one day-- the gold chart is scary. I'm fine sticking with the allocations, but part of me is still trying to predict.
I was going to post "my pp is down .5% today, should I sell??" but I didn't want to start a flame war

Re: Fear ??
I'm worried that gold and treasuries will sink in the short term, and stocks will not make up for that. See, e.g., today.

Re: PP Allows Expansion Of Tax-Sheltered Space
What happens when you rebalance, selling gold at the collectible rate? Does it make sense to hold at 20% (5/25) to 40% (10/25) of each asset in a tax-advantaged account, so that you can rebalance at least once without incurring tax liability? I've been trying to find discussion of this with the sea...

Re: Boglehead PP Debate
Gold is "useless", but so are many things people pay premiums for (anything fashion related -- most clothes, handbags, Apple products). Some day people might realize that gold is useless and sell it all. Likewise, people might realize that they don't need an iPhone when they can have a cheap Nokia...
