Re: Treasury money markets and Turbotax

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, but this is driving me nuts... Both Vanguard and Fidelity are reporting Treasury MM interest as "ordinary dividends", but does not specify the amount that's US Treasury interest. For FDLXX and VUSXX this is should be just about 100% of the &...

Re: Stock scream room

The case for 100% cash is a lot stronger than 100% Gold or Stocks IMO. 100% stocks could easily lose you 50% in a year and make take many, many years to recover. Cash will not ever do that to you unless you are talking about runaway inflation. Correct me if I am wrong on that. When I say I think ab...

How do you guys stay the course with your portfolios? I have been in the Desert Portfolio for a couple of years and it has done well for me. However, whenever I read about current events (robots taking jobs, Democratic Socialists, Govt Debt, End of the bull market etc) it makes me want to go to all...

Re: Stock scream room

It took me several years of investing to differentiate clearly between descriptive and predictive. 99.9999999% of everything one reads about investing is the former and the only thing that will improve your bottom line is the latter. Nothing wrong with stockfotainment, but it’s useless at best and ...

Re: Stock scream room

Not every day you see 1000 points, wow. Still, my rebalance is now buy 98% stocks, a sliver of bonds, and actually selling gold. Interesting. We'll see what that looks like when I really will rebalance in early Jan after contributing to my IRAs. Would have been a great move then, correct!!?? I assu...

Re: Stock scream room

Fundamental long term projected return measures are actually quite good in their accuracy...just not in the timing. Seems like it is contradictory but it is not. Bonds are utterly predictable...expect the coupon return over multiple iterations. The only thing that is going to make the PP perform we...

Re: Stock scream room

Why isn't anyone whining that all 3 assets are in the same direction (UP) today? :D Human nature is weird, isn't it? Who tunes into the news expecting to hear something positive? Seems to play out in all areas involving humans. On the various New York Yankees discussion lists I've been on when thin...

Re: Stock scream room

When I see a headline like Mark Zuckerburg "losing" the greatest amount of money any human being has ever lost in a single day it only tells me how financially illiterate people are (or else knowingly posting click-bait with a hyperbolic headline). I'm assuming, of course, that Mr. Zucker...

Re: Stock scream room

Haha, I was thinking for my birthday in Feb. Agree, I would have sold to cash to “lock-in” profits countless times between 2009 and today. PP has kept me in stocks too. It’s certainly been more challenging to stay in Gold and Bonds. Nevertheless, I am happy with the PP’s performance and combined wi...

Re: Stock scream room

The main reason I pointed this out is because the exact purpose of LTTs in the PP is for exactly the kind of conditions we are in now (no/lo/deflation) but we continually want to WIN (whip inflation now)!  I still find it amazing that people can't really stop or have a very difficult time not predi...

Hindsight bias. The Golden Butterfly portfolio is B.S..  Does anyone really think such a "free lunch" is that easy to get all packaged up for you by your friendly neighbor, Mr. Wall Street?  ::) You're not gonna get more prosperity by data mining to the past.  Forget Wall Street -- What a...

Re: Stock scream room

That's good to hear. I was waiting for my stock allocation to hit the 35% rebalance band, and it got pretty close--but then, just short of the mark, stocks started falling like a rock. This is making me consider switching to 20/30 rebalance bands going forward. Funny -- I had the opposite reaction....

Re: Stock scream room

Seems like just yesterday I was feeling bad about taking profits. I had not hit exactly 35% in stocks, and I also only did a half-assed rebalance, preferring to ease into it and finish at the point where the stock share would have hit 35%. That day never came. I really thought stocks would go wild ...

Re: Gold's Time To Shine?

My perspective is that I'd still rather go with the Canadian health care system than the American one if given a binary choice. Though, obviously, there is bias in my perspective. The waiting time issue is not as bad as portrayed in my humble opinion. We follow a triage system in Canada. If it's a ...

I've got an even better deal: $0/week. Their paywall is easy to get past (at least it was last I checked), and if I don't want to deal with it but want to read an article, it'll be available next month. I've been considering subscribing to WSJ though. Worth reading plus I just like the idea of rewa...

Re: Jim Rickards new book is an interesting read - almost PP like

Some parts of the book are genuinely fascinating, such as his discussion on the concept of choice architecture. He likens the beeping sounds your car makes when you leave the lights on as the same kind of "nudge" that 401K offering forms have to steer you into saving. The above is obvious...

Re: Books?

It depends on the content, but in general no, I have been slowing down and sounding the words out in my head. Sometimes I use the voice of the Frontline narrator. Lately I can hear the neighbor’s TV through the wall, and it’s distracting. When it’s quiet and I’ve had some coffee in the morning, I d...

Thank you, Vinny. Believe me, I have been pushing beyond the comfortable speed ever since I saw how many words you read per minute. O0 Interesting about the down-the-middle with swirls approach. I remember seeing a suggested technique of kind of slanting down and to the right. The closest I’ve come...

Finally, I'm a BIG information person, using two 23" monitors on this computer as I do in my office. Getting information from a tiny (relative to 23" monitors) is just way too inefficient. 23"? I haven't used a monitor that small for years. I'm currently using a 4K 55" monitor. ...
