Re: New study: United States fares poorly in comparison with other rich countries
statistics you don't hear about... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ooa98FHuaU0&feature=player_embedded Between 1992 and 2011, the violent crime rate in the U.S. has fallen by almost 50 percent (from 757.7 per 100,000 to 386.3 per 100,000). The murder rate in 2011 rate was 4.7 per 100,000, down f...

Re: on-line dating
I almost hate to ask, but... how does a loser like Jacob manage to attract that many seemingly professional women when they're picky as hell to begin with? What am I missing? By following advice such as is given here: http://heartiste.wordpress.com/ Warning: this is very strong stuff that will no...

ENTP. At the end of the scale on the N, less extreme on the others, but always the same type when I take the test over.

Uruguay is actually on my short list of countries ive considered in the event that ERE is unatainably expensive in the states for me. Im curious if anyone has been there and what their impressions were... I live there. What would you like to know? I'm not the original poster, but I'm going to be vi...

No, as far as I know the wash sale rules apply only to sales at a LOSS. Sales at a gain are exempt, even if your tax bracket is 0%.
I just did it again, this time in the 15% bracket, as that is better than selling in the future in the 20% bracket.

I assume that all tax rates will rise and that all government promises will be broken.

Re: Order in which to keep assets tax sheltered
I would NOT count on the appreciation in Roth accounts remaining tax-free forever. That will be a very big pile of money that I doubt the government will keep their hands out of.

I got it on the Kindle and it is indeed good to see Harry's recommendations brought up to date. If only he were here to see how things have evolved beyond anything he ever mentioned in any of his books!

I suggest anyone who believes this should definitely short gold for all he's worth.

Re: A Gold Bubble?
I think if they deflate the gold price by the global level of debt (which is rising geometrically), they will find that it is anything but a bubble. But that would mean acknowledging that gold really does have a fundamental value that affects its price, which they are trying to avoid.

Re: The Decay of GLD
There is a discussion over on Bogleheads about the expense ratio decay of the asset value of GLD. I thought this was pretty funny: let me summarize by saying that a close reading of the prospectus (which I have done) indicates that it would be possible for the vaults to be full of toasted marshmall...

Re: Jim Sinclair's take on FDR's gold confiscation
One major difference between Sandy and a collapse of the dollar is that in the case of Sandy the rest of the country was unaffected and could send help. If (when) the dollar collapses, the whole country will be in the same mess; thus, there won't be an unaffected part to send help to the affected pa...

Re: What portfolio adjustments are you making ahead of "fiscal cliff", elections, et
I recently learned that I'm in a tax bracket where long-term capital gains are taxed at zero percent (0%). This is currently scheduled to change in 2013. I know its recommended to keep LTT in IRA, but I ignored this advice when setting up PP initially. I am now moving in that direction. So...I have...

As a former actuarial "student" (trainee), I can say that whole life insurance is okay... in a non-inflationary environment. With even a small amount of inflation, it is a guaranteed loss. Buy term and invest the difference.

Re: I Think The Doom Is Getting a Little Overdone
Personally, I think the doom is way under done. Since absolutely nothing has been fixed or even improved, but in fact has been made far worse by all of the government bailouts and other meddling, I expect a sudden crash of the dollar and gold to go "to da moon". And no, the markets cannot ...

Re: Rule #7 Leverage and Mortgages: Is it broken?
Aside from a car lease that I will pay off when it expires, and then own the car (at a total cost less than buying the car for cash in the first place), my only debt is a mortgage (amounting to about 7% of my net worth) that I could pay off next week if I wanted to. Why don't I? Partly because it is...

Re: Buying Physical Gold Within an IRA Custodian Account
My understanding is that if you own a corporation, you can create a profit sharing plan in which you are the trustee. Then you can hold any assets yourself. Note: this is not tax or accounting advice, just my understanding of the possibilities. Check with your tax or accounting professional before t...
