Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

The stuff that drives me crazy is that I have to put on a mask to go into a restaurant and then walk 20 feet to my table, Then I can take it off. I would love for an expert to calculate for me the chances of catching or spreading a virus in that 20 foot walk. Especially when the restaurant is runni...

Just buy it, man. If you chicken out and don’t wear it at Wal-Mart this summer, you can always at least be a smash hit at a Halloween party.

Re: Your tax dollars at work

I assume the "aggressiveness and extroversion" refers mainly to the people at or near the top of organizational hierarchies (executives, chiefs, etc.). Even then, I think assertiveness would be a more accurate term than aggressiveness.

I actually agree that their list of “white” qualities are indeed commonly observed in white cultures throughout history.

Now, to even better educate ourselves, shall we examine a similar list of qualities commonly observed in black cultures throughout history?

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

The federal Cares Act $600/week unemployment benefit expires later this month, so there's that.

I suspect a lot of the people who have been receiving that benefit will start reconsidering their position on lockdowns when that extra dough stops rolling in.

Re: Styx proves that Trump really is a Boy Scout

I’ve thought about this occasionally over the past few years. How many people in the world, whether famous or not, could survive the level of constant, 24/7 scrutiny and all-guns-blazing attacks by the establishment on multiple fronts simultaneously as Trump has apparently managed to do? How many of...

So are you telling me that if the media started reporting every single day ad nauseam how many people were hospitalized or died today on the roads then we would all have our cars taken from us? I feel like that is what you are saying. :) Yes, basically. ;) We already had the automobile risk "c...

Regarding the risk of sending children back to school in-person, the evidence strongly suggests it's minimal. This study found that children under 16 years old account for < 2% of COVID cases , with "no documentation of child-to-child or child-to-adult transmission": https://pediatrics.aa...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

I am, for about the next 2 weeks, ok with letting the media have its day with the breaking news, and surge in cases, yada yada. If those don't translate into a material increase in deaths, then I will call bullshit. One thing to keep in mind when you look at death stats is that around 1/3 of the ex...

Re: Where would you move?

That list is useful, but it's based on broad averages. The total tax bill could potentially look very different for each state depending on a person's income and the size of home/property they choose to own.

Re: Where would you move?

My understanding is that housing prices have been rising for years in places all over the world, not just in Texas or even just the US. I suspect it has something to do with the interest rates across the world having been low for many years now. Regarding the high property tax in Texas, at least be ...

I've been using LastPass for a little while now and love it. Password managers seem like the simplest and most secure way to simultaneously (1) use a different password for every site and (2) deal with the fact that every site has its own annoyingly specific format requirements for allowable passwor...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Emperor Newsom's reinforcement of California's regime uncertainty is disproportionately hurting small and medium-sized businesses. The businesses that have enough capital to deal with this unpredictable on-again-off-again lockdown nonsense are the big-box stores and chain restaurants. The little guy...

Re: Is Trump doing a good job?

I think Fauci's biggest mistake has been in his failing to adapt his recommendations to new data as it has emerged. It became clear fairly early in the pandemic that Covid-19 is mostly a nursing home disease. Yet instead of course-correcting to focus on protecting the elderly and immunocompromised a...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Aside from the leftist power-grab aspect, I also think companies and other organizations are afraid of lawsuits and bad PR in a way that they weren’t in previous times. Maybe it has something to do with how quickly bad press and boycotts spread in the age of social media.

Re: Texts vs. Emails vs. Phone Calls

Good points, dualstow. In recent months, my brother and I have been texting each other much more, so one of the main reasons I don’t like him to text me links to long videos is because if I don’t watch the video immediately, it gets buried in an avalanche of subsequent texts and is a pain to look up...

It's not as black and white as you put it Sophie, is it? Of course I don't want crime to run rampant. Or defund police. Never said that. But as years and years of killings have shown in Chicago, with more and more cops, there is some other root cause to this issue. I still believe no child wants to...

Re: Is Trump doing a good job?

As if 2020 couldn’t get any stranger, Kanye West has announced that he plans to join the presidential race.

Given that Kanye is likely to siphon more votes from Biden than from Trump, his presence in the race might give Trump an even better chance of winning.

Re: Schools and Covid

In this morning's news, Washington's governor Inslee has declared that schools will reopen in stages, in a manner sensitive to social inequities. White children will be the last to go back. I'm kidding you not. Once again, how is this legal? Can someone provide a link? A quick Google search isn’t t...
