Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

[The criteria for testing is] still limited to people with a travel history to a short list of countries or exposure to a known COVID19 case - plus our hospital is requiring that you get approval from an in-house infectious disease committee for any test. That is laughably restrictive at this point...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

I totally f***ing give up. As colleges are closing down in a desperate effort to contain the spread of CoVid-19, students are heading out of the country in droves on "dream vacations." Ashley Henkel, 20, told NBC News that cheap flights across North America have allowed her to fulfill her ...

Ha! Up to now, corruption in government has been mostly hidden, which in a strange, roundabout way is at least an acknowledgement that the rules still apply. Now, it's the "new normal."

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

This just fries me. Not only have researchers and journalists been put under a CDC gag order, but the White House is now classifying its top-level discussions regarding CoVID-19. Together with FASAB 56, which made it impossible to determine the whereabouts of the trillions in DOD and HUD funds that ...

I've been reading that it's the second exposure to the virus that may be the really lethal one due to a much increased ability to induce a cytokine storm. Does anyone know whether this is an autoimmune phenomenon?

Re: What would it take to cause you to lose faith in the PP?

I've been a philosophical adherent to the PP for nearly a decade now, having been badly burned in the 2007-08 fiasco and having learned some hard lessons about market timing. But it was not until this year that I had the opportunity to invest once again. Notwithstanding my fright last week over the ...

Re: Rebalance during these days of high volatility?

The canonical method is to rebalance the whole portfolio when one of the four quadrants reaches as high as 35% of the total portfolio value, or as low as 15% of the total portfolio value. So, just for the sake of clarity, if the bond quadrant has exceeded 35% but the other three quadrants are still...

Re: What would it take to cause you to lose faith in the PP?

I was really afraid to look at my account today, but I finally bit the bullet and peeked. Much to my surprise, I'm actually UP from where I was a few months ago. What an incredible relief, and what a strange and wonderful experience to finally feel a sense of calm in the midst of significant market ...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

An interesting tidbit: Cloroquine, the old standby drug for treating malaria, is being used with success in the treatment of CoVID-19. Which has led to speculation that plain old quinine water might be of some use. https://www.reddit.com/r/COVID19/comments/fe47u6/chloroquine_and_hydroxychloroquine_a...

What jumps out at me is how utterly SUPERIOR this ritual must make these upper-class white women feel. But hasn't this always been the ugly underbelly of progressive wakeness?

Thanks for asking, Dualstow. She's pulled through one surgery and has another scheduled for today. So far so good. She's a tough lady.

Why, with the greatest healthcare system in the world, can the US not have testing kits readily available yet after watching this go on for weeks now in China, S Korea and Italy? Most of the contributors appear to be health care professionals and academics. Without spending a lot of time, just perusing these three threads is enough to keep y...

What would it take to cause you to lose faith in the PP?

Days like this literally make me vibrate with fear. The S&P 500 is down 5.18% as I write, and the 30-year bond is up only 0.59%. Gold is flat. I know you're not supposed to look at the PP on a daily basis, and I know the inverse correlations on which the PP is predicated are based on long-term m...

Re: Health insurance

Would the federal government step in and pay for people's medical bills if (say) Humana went under? Seems likely. Would they do the same if an HCM went under? Hard to say. I'll admit it's less likely the government would step in than with a traditional insurer, mostly because the traditional insure...

Re: Health insurance

HSMs vary greatly both in terms of their scope of coverage and their financial stability, so it's hard to generalize. Several have supplemental programs that extend coverage beyond the ordinary limits. A number cover preexisting conditions after a certain number of years, or have phase-in periods. T...

So which health sharing ministry are you a member of, Maddy? If you are ok with posting that.
