Re: Ted Cuz's Weird Father
I had never before heard the term "dominionism," but I see this philosophy expressed almost universally these days within evangelical circles. I live in a small rural community where evangelical Christianisty is the only game in town, so it's not all that hard to discern what people are ...

When you turn off the pilot light or it otherwise goes out on its own, gas DOES NOT continue to come out. The flow of gas is allowed only by a thermocouple heated by the pilot flame.

Re: The Revenge of the Lower Classes and the Rise of American Fascism
I think it's very overwrought. The underlying premise about Trump's popularity is right, but it's quite a stretch to go from there to fascism (as he uses the term). Still, it's worthwhile to keep it in mind.

I wish I could be confident that Trump will beat Hillary. I think she is our next president.
As to the GOP, I think they will trip all over themselves lining up behind Trump. There will be a few who throw themselves under the bus, though.

Re: Thoughts on gay rights?
Like most of us, I have met or known gay people that seemed perfectly fine in all the ways that matter to mainstream people. However, as already mentioned, there is a very nihilistic aspect of the lifestyle of many (most?) gay men. I don't know how it is on the lesbian side. Probably not as bad. ...

Yes, but I think it is a different kind of deflation though. Central bank activities have made stocks go up. (Ignoring the very recent downward move.)ochotona wrote: I think it's Deflation. I don't think it's a fifth pattern.
So maybe it's different, maybe it's not, probably it doesn't matter as to the PP.

The fifth economic pattern
A lot of us feel this current situation does not fit any of Harry Browne's four described economic patterns. I know I don't. We've discussed this before, without any real consensus. I thought maybe we could revisit it again. Just throwing out ideas here. The first thing I see is that this is th...

100 Trillion Dollars in global wealth vanished
John Mauldin's most recent newsletter spells out the basic math about the value of oil reserves. The drop in world wealth, balance sheet wise, is $100 trillion. He points out how this dwarfs any of the drops we've ever seen in more conventional balance sheet wealth items like home values, stocks, e...

I don't recall the term cultural evolution being used in the book. He discusses how humans, left to their own devices, have used specialization and trade to enhance their lives and solve each new problem that presented itself. He says world population growth is slowing, and that this comes from pr...

Re: Tilt due to taxes?
Fill your tax-sheltered space with Treasuries. Outside of tax-sheltered space, substitute muni bonds for Treasuries. Just understand that you are giving up the protection and "favored in a panic" status of Treasuries. I found that out the hard way in the 08 meltdown. Use large cap stock...

Re: Tilt due to taxes?
I sent you a PM to ask some questions privately. But for public consumption, do you mind saying if your taxes are high solely due to your investments? Because that is definitely fixable, with one big modification to the PP. But if you have ordinary earnings putting you in the top bracket, that's d...

They'll come up empty if they ransack my house. I just haven't got my head around stashing coins here and there. I do think a discreetly-placed safe is a good idea. Who knows.
