Re: Budgeting & Cash-flow Controls/Strategies
Bean, Could you clarify the nature/reason of in/out flows to that savings account with a bit more detail? It sounds like you're pretty good at not over-spending on the credit card. I'm assuming that is just will-power and not spending limits? Sure :) Inflows: Paychecks Bonus Interest from Mortgage...
Re: Silver?
Any suggestions on interesting numismatic silver coins, other than "mint"/"proof" style which are not very interesting. Maybe some historical coin that's largely silver composition, and doesn't cost much more than silver content (maybe 2x silver content value)? Government minted...

Re: Budgeting & Cash-flow Controls/Strategies
I keep it very simple. 1) Income goes into a single checking account 2) The checking account is treated like a sinking fund 3) All my expenses that can go on a credit card are charged then paid off monthly 4) All my other expenses that can be automatically drafted are set up accordingly 5) Investme...
Re: Silver?
All good investments should be able to achieve a few mental hurdles at or before the point of purchase. My approach to Silver is: Objective: Speculative hedge against what is in my opinion unrestrained currency manipulation. Entry Approach: Dollar cost averaged purchasing to a set number of ounces....

Re: Favorite camping goods
I have spent a lot of my life outdoors so here is my starter advice: Find an REI or equlivent outdoor store: Take classes on 10 essentials and navigation (first piece of gear is your brain) Tent - 3 season tent or 4 if you will camp while it is cold. Use an REI 3 season and get it sized for 1 more t...

Re: Buying Physical Gold
With a (current) 50-1 ratio of silver to gold, 800 oz of silver is 16 oz of gold. Imagine buying 3-4 gold coins 4 times, and then buying a house with the 16 coins that very comfortably fit in your pocket. This thought process is one of the reasons that folks think any reversion to the historical m...

Re: Buying Physical Gold
1) How much should I buy? Let's assume for the sake of discussion I have a 100k portfolio. If I buy 5% in physical gold that's only 3 or 4 gold coins. It hardly seems worthwhile. But let's say at some point my portfolio is 1M. Then 5% would be 50K which at current prices would be about 40 gold...

Re: Air-Tites on Silver Coins? Worth It?
Yes. If you are buying anything more than a bar or round it will provide you with protection on whatever numismatic premium you paid. Sad part is, most bars and rounds cost have just as much premium as government bullion and no real numismatic value. (Of course I buy those stupid lunar pamp bars a...

Thanks guys for your thoughts. It would result in very large gold holdings that introduces risks of storage and large rebalanc...

Re: Protection against a sharp drop
Inflation seems to be picking up too. That pricing power can't come about without a corresponding increase in purchasing power. I think, if I had to hazard a guess, that this is where we could disagree. But my personal experience is what informs my opinion. As a small businessman, even if I wanted ...
