Re: The Funny Thing About This Gold Rally

I couldn't agree more.  I'd long thought of gold as an extremely powerful investment but its volatility and history of long, deep slumps made me feel faint every time I considered it seriously.  Powerful but scary as hell -- like some kind of chainsaw that was all blades and no handle.  Until I disc...

Re: Advice before deployment

This certainly looks like a nice setup to me.  I actually have such a high % of my net worth in the PP that the long-term bonds fill up my entire tax-deferred space, so I think your setup (including some SHY and just enough gold for one tax-deferred rebalance) is superior to what I've got.  I like t...

Re: The value of "stale" investment shows

Nice, that sounds like an illuminating experiment.  It might be the case that all investment shows are more valuable a little "stale".  The good concepts will stand the test of time.  The picks, however, will probably seem mostly awful, occasionally lucky, or exercises in entirely missing the point....

Re: PRPFX + 10% Long Term Treasuries = Good Alternative?

MediumTex came up with the idea of using 10% EDV and 90% PRPFX.  EDV invests in long-term zero-coupon treasuries, and thus has even more volatility than TLT.  He figured out that the extra volatility makes it an even better counterweight for PRPFX's light long-term bond holdings.  Zero-coupon treasu...

Re: New Permanent Portfolio Charts

Good info, Gumby!  The consistency is pretty amazing.  It's almost scary that when you look at the full 1970-present day graph that you can barely even see any evidence of 2008.  (I assure you that my portfolio at the time contained plenty of evidence that 2008 happened.) I know that it's not a fant...

The value of "stale" investment shows

Harry Browne's investment radio shows are all now 5-6 years old.  By most standards, this ought to mean that they must be filled with outdated information and therefore of virtually no value.  However, as I'm sure anyone who has given these old shows a listen would agree, the material is not only in...

Re: Gold Tax Strategies

Thanks, good to hear that it's not an excessively scary process.  Those both sound like handy resources if they are not too much trouble to post up! On the net asset value premium, I was able to get comfortable with "what" it was but could never quite wrap my mind around the "why" on the premium flu...

Re: Gold Tax Strategies

My gold tax stategy is: I hold about 7% in physical bullion and the rest to make it a 25% allocation I use GTU , I fill out the proper paper work: form 8621 along with updated attachment to form 8621  I elect To treat the PFIC as a QEF. I file this with my income tax and when it comes time to pay t...

Re: Gold Tax Strategies

Adopting the PP strategy may be one of the smartest investment moves you will ever make. Smarter than investing nearly 100% in equities and getting my butt kicked up around my shoulders in 2001 and 2008?  The deuce you say!  :) In my defense, I was a baby when I started down that path and that's wh...

Re: Gold Tax Strategies

Thanks gentlemen, these answers really help!  I have to keep this in proper perspective.  It's not like I'll be cashing out big jangling bags of Krugerrands every 3 months and watching 28% of my profits go up in smoke.  So long as gold isn't going to the moon, I can let it do what it does best -- ac...

Gold Tax Strategies

I have to start off by thanking craigr for this excellent forum.  Studying the Permanent Portfolio has been a most eye-opening experience.  Along with Harry Browne's original book, this forum and your website have been tremendous resources for me.  The whole thing has been damn exciting. I've manage...
