Re: Is this appropriate for my CASH holdings?

VFISX is good. I use this for cash for all VG holdings and have for a few years.  You can get check-writing privileges out of that fund, so it works well for emergency funds, too.

Re: Shorter Term Instead of LT Bonds?

If you are overly concerned about one component of the PP, just reduce the size of that component as well as all the other components. That way you retain the integrity of the PP for rebalancing and the remainder can be used to establish a VP to tilt your total portfolio in whichever direction you ...

Re: Lee/Rubio Tax Plan

Agreed as it's written it's not ideal, but I like the idea of simplification that it offers.  What if the brackets were something like 5/25 and/or change the break-over point? In this proposal, is the $75k per person or per family?  I guess it eliminates the married categories, etc. and only has one...

Re: What are your favorite online news sources?

On the topic of the OP, a friend turned me on to The Skimm.  It's a daily email with commentary on the day's news, delivered on weekday mornings.  It's directed toward women, from what I can tell, but I find it to be quite good.

Re: "You Haven't Lost Money Until You Sell" & the PP

I think this is where the idea of holding investments that generate cash flow comes back into play.  If your investments are paying you on a regular basis, then who cares what the market tells you they are worth?  If they are not paying you, then the only way to get money out of them is to sell them...

Re: New Generation Hamburger Chains

I somehow missed this thread originally, but I second the vote for Culver's.  I'd put it up there on my list with In-n-Out and Five Guys. Also, looks like the Consumer Reports rank is more in line with my experience. I wasn't enamored with the Smashburger burger, but their herb fries were really good.

Re: Amazon Prime Pantry

I also noticed the Pantry yesterday when I added some food to my cart. Every once in a while I add food, flashlights or knives rather than pay for shipping. Now I have Prime, but I thought I'd still add a few things, and they want $6. I wonder if, when I cancel Prime, I can go back to ordering food...

Re: Advanced DIY

Be careful about using white vinegar as a rinse aid.  There are some parts (gaskets etc) that will eventually be corroded by the vinegar, and are expensive to replace.  The Bosch dishwasher I just got, though, went even further:  there is some kind of chemical sensor that will only detect their pre...

Re: Home Defense Gun 2.0

For me, the trouble with the AR for home defense is the stigma non gun owners associate with a rifle of that type.  If you ever have to use a gun for home defense, there will be legal repercussions.  It may be better to rely on an old shotgun, maybe a 20 gauge to reduce recoil, whose primary purpos...

Re: Advanced DIY

Not sure where I read about it, but I use white vinegar in the dishwasher as the rinse aid. Been using it for several years...seems to work okay.  I guess I haven't done a comparison vs. the name-brand stuff, so I'm not sure what works better.

Re: The Cognitive Dissonace of Money

What a great post. I suffer from the need to get the best value or return on investment from my purchases. I feel that I turn even the most basic purchases into a major research project; analyses paralyses. It took hours of online research, and brick and mortar shopping to replace the small TV that...

Re: Gold dealers in Texas?

I have had a very good experience with Texas Precious Metals; I believe they allow you to pick up at their sales office with advance notice, but I had my order shipped direct.  I've picked up a couple of 1/10oz coins from Liquid Bullion off I-10, so that is also an option if you want to deal locally...

Re: Best iPhone Apps (or Android)

For long driving trips or long commutes, I like Waze. It tracks real-time traffic conditions based on other people using Waze, so its turn-by-turn navigation automatically re-routes you if necessary to avoid sudden traffic jams, accidents, sudden road closures, etc. I've heard of people using Waze,...

I have heard good things about HERE maps from some of the folks on the motorcycle forums.  Is it out of beta and on the play store now?  How big is a typical map file?  I have almost 20GB of maps for OSMAND...entire US vector maps, hillshade, and contours, but still have some room on my SD card. It...

Re: My Argument To Never Pay Down Home Mortgage

Whether you get a mortgage or pay cash, the FAR greater impact on your financial future is the house you choose to purchase. The guy who wrote the Millionaire Next Door has another book out called "Stop Acting Rich", and I believe the key take-away, at least for me, from that book was tha...

Re: My Argument To Never Pay Down Home Mortgage

It's interesting...reading all of the rational reasons why I should have kept my mortgage, I can't really disagree too much with any of them.  I'm still not going out to the bank on Monday to get a mortgage.  For those who have not paid off their mortgage, I would say:  try it out.  If you don't lik...
