Re: Climate Change skeptic

If I had to guess, I'd say that there are a lot of people out there who have a very, very hard time with the line of reasoning that goes something like this: "Climate change is clearly happening (as it always has), and human activities may be affecting its magnitude. However, it is unlikely to...

Re: Examine.com 4 superfoods you should be eating

Yes, I do enjoy braunschweiger.  My grandfather used to always have some in the fridge growing up; we would usually spread it on ritz crackers as an afternoon snack.  I bought some a few months back.  I'd say if you enjoy braunschweiger, try the recipe I linked to.  Very similar taste and texture, a...

Re: Examine.com 4 superfoods you should be eating

Why go to such extremes to eat inherently disgusting animal parts when it's simply not necessary?  Are y'all expecting some kind of magical elixir to happen just because you're getting a huge dose of Vitamin A, bile and toxins from eating liver?  That's aka snake oil. Hmm. I wouldn't say making pat...

Re: Stocks and Bonds Decline

It's finally here and I'm surprised MG hasn't jumped on the opportunity to say "I told you so". How do those that have less than the suggested gold allocation feel about the only asset that is currently offsetting losses? A couple of days like this and I will be 25x4 without needing to re...

Re: Examine.com 4 superfoods you should be eating

Based on the last couple posts, I decided to skip mixing the liver in with my burgers.  I did however make a pate with the recipe I linked to previously.  I have to say it's excellent.  I used grass fed butter as the fat, and I did soak the liver briefly in heavy cream before cooking it.  I probably...

Re: Advanced DIY

Be careful about using white vinegar as a rinse aid.  There are some parts (gaskets etc) that will eventually be corroded by the vinegar, and are expensive to replace.  The Bosch dishwasher I just got, though, went even further:  there is some kind of chemical sensor that will only detect their pre...

Re: Examine.com 4 superfoods you should be eating

If you try grinding it up in a bunch of ground beef, let me know how the taste-dispersion method works.  I don't want to ruin 8 hamburgers if I can just choke down some liver every 2 weeks :). Haha. I think I will give it a try just for you.  I'll see if I can cut a small chunk off and incorporate ...

Re: Examine.com 4 superfoods you should be eating

Every once in a while I buy liver and try to do something tasty with it.  I ... And serve it with a big pile of caramelized onions. Yes! I "marinaded" it for 1.5 hours in whipping cream (didn't have milk... I cut back significantly on dairy but still like my cream in my coffee). Then frie...

Whether you do the "gap" meditation, the three breath meditation, or similar, they are very helpful.  I would encourage you to try several of them (including doing the 3 breath meditation for longer periods) and which every one you like best, do it e.g. mid morning and mid afternoon.  The...

Re: Is this appropriate for my CASH holdings?

Average maturity is 2.4 yrs, average duration 2.3 years.  So 1% increase in interest rate will yield 2.3% loss.  I'd rather be in treasuries than corporate paper, I want check-writing privileges, and my money is at vanguard.  This seems to be the best option. What happened in 1991?  When the treasur...

Re: Dividend Growth vs Shareholder Yield

So you're looking to buy an ETF? If you wanted to DIY, I'd think your best bet would be to get a list such as the Dividend Aristocrats, then perform a shareholder yield type analysis on those to find the highest yielding (lowest price).  Use 5yr avg Free cash flow (calculated yourself) and market ca...

VFISX is good. I use this for cash for all VG holdings and have for a few years.  You can get check-writing privileges out of that fund, so it works well for emergency funds, too.

Re: Shorter Term Instead of LT Bonds?

If you are overly concerned about one component of the PP, just reduce the size of that component as well as all the other components. That way you retain the integrity of the PP for rebalancing and the remainder can be used to establish a VP to tilt your total portfolio in whichever direction you ...

Re: Lee/Rubio Tax Plan

Agreed as it's written it's not ideal, but I like the idea of simplification that it offers.  What if the brackets were something like 5/25 and/or change the break-over point? In this proposal, is the $75k per person or per family?  I guess it eliminates the married categories, etc. and only has one...

Re: What are your favorite online news sources?

On the topic of the OP, a friend turned me on to The Skimm.  It's a daily email with commentary on the day's news, delivered on weekday mornings.  It's directed toward women, from what I can tell, but I find it to be quite good.

Re: "You Haven't Lost Money Until You Sell" & the PP

I think this is where the idea of holding investments that generate cash flow comes back into play.  If your investments are paying you on a regular basis, then who cares what the market tells you they are worth?  If they are not paying you, then the only way to get money out of them is to sell them...

Re: New Generation Hamburger Chains

I somehow missed this thread originally, but I second the vote for Culver's.  I'd put it up there on my list with In-n-Out and Five Guys. Also, looks like the Consumer Reports rank is more in line with my experience. I wasn't enamored with the Smashburger burger, but their herb fries were really good.

I also noticed the Pantry yesterday when I added some food to my cart. Every once in a while I add food, flashlights or knives rather than pay for shipping. Now I have Prime, but I thought I'd still add a few things, and they want $6. I wonder if, when I cancel Prime, I can go back to ordering food...

Re: Home Defense Gun 2.0

For me, the trouble with the AR for home defense is the stigma non gun owners associate with a rifle of that type.  If you ever have to use a gun for home defense, there will be legal repercussions.  It may be better to rely on an old shotgun, maybe a 20 gauge to reduce recoil, whose primary purpos...

Not sure where I read about it, but I use white vinegar in the dishwasher as the rinse aid. Been using it for several years...seems to work okay.  I guess I haven't done a comparison vs. the name-brand stuff, so I'm not sure what works better.
