Re: Designated Hitter

Dullsville is having 9 sluggers waiting to hit a homerun. No double switches. No strategy. Dullsville is aging hitters (note: NOT baseball players) who no longer have the skills to play in the field unfairly extending their careers. None of your points are valid because they apply evenly to both tea...

Re: Designated Hitter

Are you allowed to live in MA and not be a BoSox fan? If you do go to Cleveland (motto: hey, it's better than Detroit!) I highly recommend the pro football hall of fame in Canton (1 hour drive). One of the best museums I have ever been to. Also has one of the best symphony orchestras in the world. ...

Re: Forum / Team?

I wish I had all the answers, and a way to satisfy everyone, but it just doesn't exist (which I think is a big part of PS's point above). In the other thread about the forum, I pointed out that there were outages when nobody was running the ship. That's better now from a technical perspective, but p...

Re: Hooray! Forum is back up!

The extended outages were towards the end of the Craig/Tex era, where they really had moved on to other things. There wasn't anybody running the ship to fix whatever might pop up, and because of a less-than-optimal host, things did pop up. It hasn't been a problem lately. Every once in a while the ...

Re: IAU Taxes w/Fidelity and TurboTax

I'm with era, Pug, I'm not sure that makes sense. I've held IAU in taxable with Ameritrade and have never received information about these microtransactions from them. This is the first I'm hearing that other brokers do it. To be honest I've always figured it was de minimus and could be ignored. So ...

Now that it's been deleted, the imagination runs wild with how awful it must have been!

For the record, it was a good-natured reference to Vinny's penchant for digging up old threads and asking for an update.

Re: What causes the Permanent Portfolio to go down?

IIRC correctly both MG and I came up with something close to high 20s% MaxDD (e.g. 28-29% or something like that) when using daily data. That is my personal worse case for planning purposes. It should be noted that this occurred when gold went vertical and then crashed in the early 80s. All you had...

Re: Maintaining Coding Skills During Break

Very cool, PS. Thanks to you and everyone at the project for all the great work. I think KDE is far underrated. In my salad days I used to run Gentoo and compile everything locally. Nowadays I'm on Debian stable. I don't have much (any!) spare time to devote to custom versions of packages. So it'll ...

Re: Maintaining Coding Skills During Break

Smithy, would you work on the per-screen scaling factors? That would be really handy because I have a small HiDPI laptop connected to a big honkin' monitor at home. I need a lot more scaling on the laptop. Thanks! :-)

Re: 600 Members Coming Up

My guess is that the raw member count is more influenced by the number of bots able to sign up than anything else. Maybe there's some useful way to figure out which accounts are real. Or at least exclude the accounts that have been banned for being bots from the graph of members over time.

Re: Maintaining Coding Skills During Break

You should consider contributing to free software projects. Not only will it keep your skills sharp, but you'll make connections, build a really interesting portfolio, and none of your work will be hidden by NDAs or anything. PointedStick IIRC is some kind of bigwig now at the KDE project. He might ...

I've never fired a gun before in my life. I've got mixed feelings about carrying one everyday if I lived in a place that allowed it. It seems to me that the use of a gun, even for legitimate self-defence purposes almost always results in bad consequences for the user somehow. The legal ramification...

Except you bought it with post-tax money instead of pre-tax money.

Re: Homelessness on the Rise?

I read an article somewhere by a guy who had a period of homelessness in his life. He said he made camp outside of town, and had plenty of time to hike into town (and back) to conduct his business. He said it was more considerate of everyone than camping in town, and (IIRC) in some ways easier on hi...

When it goes wrong, it goes BADLY wrong. I don't see how the risk is worth switching from contacts, which really give excellent vision.

I'm in a similar situation, Vinny: almost always contacts. Got some glasses from Zenni and I think they're great. Lots of interesting options. I sprang for the oleophopic coating, mostly because young'uns are likely to get their hands on them. But you can also go very cheap. I got a backup pair for ...

Don't forget the publicly made a solemn vow to each other and to God to stay married until one of them dies. Not a vow to stay together until they thought they might be happier doing something else.

MediumTex used to run the forum, and Craig owned the domain. At one point he asked for some volunteers to be moderators to help him, and so TennPaGa and l82start became moderators. I think Tex had largely backed way off almost to nothing by the time Craig decided to move on to things other than the ...

Re: Too bad George Orwell isn't around to see this

Impeaching for something that isn't a crime would be a terrible precedent. How would a President even know whether something he's doing is impeachable or not, if he can be impeached for something that's legal? Fortunately, I don't think it's true. Surely there has to be a crime for somebody to be im...
