Re: slightly confused about rebalancing

Monthly deposits go into cash. I check the portfolio annually with a calendar reminder, and also after a major finance-related world event that everyone's talking about (e.g. 9/11 or the 2008 global financial crisis). If it's within the 15/35 bands I do nothing, otherwise I rebalance to 4x25. (IIRC ...

Re: Any value in multiple ETFs?

is there any value in having my counterparty risk spread that way? Yes, splitting an asset across multiple ETF issuers hedges against an issuer going out of business suddenly or committing some kind of malfeasance. Harry Browne suggested splitting the stock allocation across multiple fund sponsors ...

I use the 4 ETF tickers that are "purest" analogues for the PP assets, breaking ties with expense ratio or volume. Currently I'm using: VTI, TLT, GLDM, BIL

Re: What is your current portfolio?

My IRA is a 4x25 in ESGV, VGLT, VUSXX, GLDM, and some individual gold coins (since lost at sea ;D )

My 401k is essentially the same but uses the plan sponsor's cash and S&P500 funds.

Taxable cash is in an online savings account.

Re: Stock and ETF brokerage costs plunge

IMO this is a great trend for retail investors. As a 4x25 PP investor who rebalances annually, commissions have always been a minor consideration, and payments for my order flow are an extremely tiny consideration. Cash is commission-free so I'm only making a maximum of 3 trades per account per year...

Re: DIY individual stock fund

It is common for a company's size ranking to bump up or down one rank from year to year. So the method of picking every k'th company will experience high turnover and suffer from tax inefficiency and transaction overhead. Probably the way to go is to just pick the top 50 (or whatever) largest compan...

This firm endorses the PP: https://americanasset.net/

I have no connection or experience with them aside from reading their website, so do your due diligence. IIRC one of the principals has posted here a few times.

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

All I can say is, I've been talking about the PP online since 2008 (11 years and counting!) and the entire time, people have been constantly asking this question. "I like the PP but this moment seems like a bad time to buy in because reasons, what should I do?" Throughout this time the PP ...

I have two brokerages, my personal accounts are at Vanguard and my 401k is at Schwab. I plan on keeping most funds at Vanguard and a minority at either Schwab or Fidelity.

Re: Question about 401k plan allocations in the PP

Either approach is probably fine. I use a brokerage window and am required to hold some assets in plan funds. I use the plan funds for cash and stocks and the brokerage window for gold and long-term bonds. I find it most convenient to let contributions accumulate in the cash fund, and then rebalance...

SHV, BIL, or TBILL ladder (or auto roll as I see people calling on it on the forum) or maybe Fidelity short term treasury fund, or vanguard short term treasury fund (I think Fidelity will let me do this). I have the option to choose any of these. IMO, all of these options are perfectly fine. I'd pi...

Re: How to withdraw cash in retirement?

This is one of these subjects where any thoughtful plan should work fine, so you might as well do whatever you find most comfortable and convenient. An everyday-expense checking account is so small relative to the portfolio that I don't think it matters very much whether it is considered inside the ...

Re: Gyroscopic Portfolios Is Now Under Construction

Glad you appreciate the site and the suggestions. I view the Golden Butterfly as a 4x25 PP plus a variable portfolio of small-cap value. This is compatible with PP dogma for an investor who wants to tilt toward prosperity. I think the GB is fine and I don't think I'd try to talk someone out of it. I...

Re: Gyroscopic Portfolios Is Now Under Construction

Thanks for this effort, it's off to a great start. It'd be nice for this site to reprise Craig's tradition of an annual post on the PP's annual returns, with an explanation for why each of the four assets did what it did, and comparison to a couple benchmarks. Another useful resource would be a list...

GLDM and AAAU are tied with respect to expense ratio, at 0.18%. Does anyone have an argument for why one is better than the other?

Re: Which Assets in Roth IRA?

There are two schools of thought, either "one big PP spread among all accounts" or "one separate 4x25 in each account." When I started out I did "one big PP" but later changed to "separate 4x25". Both approaches work fine and have their merits, so I think this...

Re: Best Allocation: Living off just the interest

The question was whether or not a HBPP or GB should theoretically have a different weighting (primarily in its cash component) as it scales due to its underlying principles since a very wealthy person would be at less risk of liquidating lagging assets to make ends meet during a recession. No, acco...

The ETF picks look good. I hold IAU for my paper gold.

IMO, 30/70 total stock/total bond is a solid portfolio where the PP is unavailable.
