Re: Perspective on the current drawdown
The extraction costs of any mineral don't matter. If gold mining slows or stops for a while, there's enough gold above ground and being traded around as paper gold to keep traders busy. I believe Craigr checks his HBPP once a year, if nothing is stirring. I think gold is heading to $500 or less but,...

Re: Mathjak Thread of Anti-PP
Now is not the time to be in the HBPP, not for me at any rate. When gold did less than nothing after the Grexit scare, I sold it, and fortunately before that gigantic sale was placed a few days ago which beat people up more. I also got out after the long Treasury beating started in earnest. My finan...

Re: PP ex gold - using hedged gold as insurance?
Agreed, but gold has no SHTF value in an actual physical emergency / natural disaster. You can transport it, yes, but it will probably get taken from you at international borders. If you try to barter with 1 oz American Eagles, someone will rob you. It's only good if there are still in existence rel...

Re: Predictions For The Bottom In Gold
Everyone tries to manipulate the price of any trade, in both directions. That's just a given. The problem is when individual investors ignore price action and interpret everything through a political / ideological lens. Or, even just pride... the ability to proudly say that you held fast in the PP, ...

Re: The GOLD scream room
I'd wait. The pounding could get worse. I don't pay attention to the markets that much anymore but I happened to stumble on CNBC and they were talking about gold so I took a look online and... HOLY $%^&! Gold has taken a real pounding since the last time I looked. If this keeps up I may have to ...

In August 2014 Dollars, the price of gold was under $400 in 2001. What's stopping it from visiting that point again?

Re: The GOLD scream room
So sorry to hear it. The entire commodity complex is stricken due to dis-inflation, no-inflation, de-flation, whatever you want to call it... and a powerful US Dollar. I lost my job as an oil geophysicist in March, that was my wake-up call; getting my head slammed against a concrete wall at 100 MPH....

Re: Why do you use the PP?
It appears that the story of gold is the story of the dollar. I don't know if the inflation narrative for gold still applies, or if it does, under what specific conditions. It's not anything I want to place an implicit, unquestioned bet on any longer. Today, as inflation and interest rates slowly cr...

Re: Why do you use the PP?
I hope it keeps on doing what it's supposed to do. It would be nice if the portfolio wasn't just a long-bond anomaly. I invest in the PP because it's the best portfolio for my needs. My career accumulation phase was notably truncated by aggressive saving after only 14 years, so 30-year returns were...

Re: Why do you use the PP?
Having a PP and a VP is like being a devout Christian with a mistress on the side!!! ;D FYI, the fall in long term bonds and risk of further declines, and the astounding deadness of gold, has stopped me out of the HBPP totally . When gold was non-responsive to Grexit, I knew all of the goldbuggery ...

Re: meeting your retirement goals with the pp
OK, but... if someone had used the PP as their accumulation phase portfolio, their portfolio size is likely smaller at retirement. So the PP has a higher SWR on a smaller amount. But if we forgot about the SW RATE and go after the SW absolute amount, based on a $10,000 investment made four decades b...

Re: No where to hide
There was an article recently on SeekingAlpha that pointed out that the emerging market indices are composed of lots of junk; state owned enterprises and whatnot. Emerging indices and therefore ETFs have been a disappointment since 2011. Maybe you could play with a exclusive, boutique proprietary fu...

The time to buy gold is coming... under $1000 an ounce. Maybe even $500 an ounce. I will buy the gold that today's gold bugs will sell in a panic and not tell anyone about.

Why would individuals like ourselves choose bonds with negative yields?

Yes, there would even be people buying treasuries with negative yield if other assets was showing catastrophic returns.
